Server Error 554 - Policy Violation

Hello there,

I have been having a serious issue with Windows Live Mail recently.
I am unable to send messages. I can receive messages with no problems but everytime I try to send an email from any POP3 accountI get the following message:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server.
For help solving this problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Live Mail", and read the "I'm having problems sending e-mail" section.
If you need help determining the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxx@aapt.net.au'.
Subject 'test'
Server Error: 554
Server Response: 554 5.7.1 <C-59-101-81-215.syd.connect.net.au[59.101.81.215]>: Client host rejected: (SPM:RAD)
User account blocked from sending email due to policy violation - Please contact support

Server: 'mail.aapt.net.au'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC79
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No

I have already tried the following:

1. Uninstalled AVG Antivirus;
2. Deleted the POP3 account and created new one;
3. Tried using the "Require outgoing mail authentication" options;
4. Contacted the ISP and confirmed POP and SMTP servers;

None of the above worked.
If helps, I am using Live Mail on the Laptop and Outlook 2007 on the desktop (Vista Home Premium x32). I am having problems in both computers.

There were only two recent events I can link the problem to. They are:-

1. Vista SP1 installation (on both PCs), and
1. AVG 8.0 installation (on both PCs). But considering that I have removed AVG and the problem still persists I am not sure what could have sparkled it all.

Please help. I am clueless.
Cheers,

Marcos

Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet
provider's equipment to another's before it reaches the server?
If so, such connections to port 25 are often blocked to cause
problems for spammers. Note that if you're using a wireless
connection, it can connect to a neighbor's wireless server instead
of yours, and therefore the connection starts out through your
neighbor's internet provider's equipment instead of yours. In such
a case, you need to ask your email provider if their outgoing mail
server allows you to send it outgoing mail through a port other
than port 25, and if so, where to find their instructions for switching
to the other port. Just trying all the ports is a very slow way to find
out, since there are about 65,000 ports available and few outgoing
mail servers aceept outgoing mail through more than a few of them.

See if this helps you find such information:

Re: Server Error 554 - Policy Violation

Thanks!

I run a very simple but WEP secured home wireless network connection. Everything runs through a combo router/modem.

What puzzles me is that this email account was working fine. I just checked that my last "good" email was sent out on the 26 May ... two weeks ago ... what could have gone wrong?

Cheers,
Marcos

Email providers who want to change whether they apply the port 25
blockage to connections coming in from outside often do it without
notice.

Check with your mail provider and see if they support alternate ports for
POP3 Email. I have one POP3 account that uses 3535 for outbound and 110 for
inbound. An alternate might be to use a SSL connection. That would take
you away from using port 25 to those like 465 - Outbound/995 -Inbound, or
what ever alternate ports your provider allows you to use.

If using an alternate port fixes things then yes, you have identified
someone is blocking port 25 between you and your email host. As for where
it is being blocked is anyone's guess since many ISP's or those they
subcontract your service to will not admit to doing it.

Re: Server Error 554 - Policy Violation

The critical part of the error message is

Server Response: 554 5.7.1
<C-59-101-81-215.syd.connect.net.au[59.101.81.215]>: Client host
rejected: (SPM:RAD)
User account blocked from sending email due to policy violation -

The issue isn't WLM or any software on your PC. Your ISP if refusing
mail from you because they have identified you as a spammer.

I see from another note that you are running a wireless network. So
assuming that you aren't really a spammer, it could be that either a
spambot got installed on your network that is sending the spam, or a
neighbor of yours has piggybacked on your network and sent the spam.

Or it might be as simple that you sent to a mailing list and exceed your
ISP's message limit.

Re: Server Error 554 - Policy Violation

I responded to your similar post in the Windows Mail newsgroup.

Seems like the error message from the server is fairly self-evident:
"User account blocked from sending email due to policy violation - Please
contact support."

So, have you contacted AAPT tech support?

Re: Server Error 554 - Policy Violation

Thanks all!

I'll check with AAPT later today.
I will also run a spyware software to ensure mail is not being sent out without my knowledge. Does anyone recommend an efficient free spyware removal software?

I'll post an update as soon as I undertake these tasks.
Thanks again!

You are allowed to have more than one antispyware program installed
at the same time without problems. I use the following three, but run
only one of them at a time:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/single/trialpay.php

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en>

One of the first two is good at detecting spyware already on your
machine; the other is good at blocking any more from downloading;
and the third one is just an extra check.
