| Guest | Potentially Dangerous Search Pointer Bug I have discovered a potentially dangerous bug which occurs when using the search function. As you know, when you key in a search term, WLMail begins searching immediately and I have found displays the first message matching the search almost instantaneously, but if it finds several, the search changes the pointer from the initially found message to another, potentially incorrect message. In my case, I had two groups who were engaged in dialog on a topic which shared the subject. The message that initially displayed was to the message I wanted to forward, so I clicked Forward and began selecting my group, and typing my message. Unfortunatley, the pointer had moved to the other message, and the message I forwarded contained information that caused me irreparable harm. This is a serious bug and illustrates to me that this is not a commericially acceptable product. |

| Guest | Re: Potentially Dangerous Search Pointer Bug The search function (I presume you're referring to the 'Find a message' wordwheel) will find - eventually - all messages containing the string you have keyed in. It has no way of knowing which is the 'correct' one in your opinion. Which of the messages it finds has focus depends on so many variables that I haven't been able to pin it down. But I don't think I would ever assume that the system had found and marked precisely the message I was thinking of. How do you imagine that the program should work out which message - of the many containing your search string - it was that you wanted to forward? I don't think you can blame the program because you failed to read what you were about to send before you sent it. -- Noel "tester" <tester@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:2FF88546-1172-40CB-B34B-59B616394367@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: Potentially Dangerous Search Pointer Bug You are not understanding what I have reported. If it finds at least one message, you are presented with the message found before it has completed its search. As it continues to find other messages, the potential exists that the pointer moves and the message it origininally displayed is not in fact the message "in focus" to use the term you have presented. So you may in fact begin replying to a different message than you thought you were, because the pointer moved without your selecting a different message. This is a bug, because you didn't do anything to have the system switch your highlighted message to another, it did it by itself. And it is potentially dangerous because. You and I have bantered before and your passion for Microsoft is commendable but not objective. "Ildhund" wrote:

back-pedal and make it look like you intended to do that. At any rate, when I am forwarding a message I usually open it first to make sure it is the right one. When you're dealing with sensitive information of whatever nature it pays to be careful. Rotf, lmao.

| Guest | Re: Potentially Dangerous Search Pointer Bug There's no way of knowing in which order messages containing the search term will be found in the index. It could be the most recently indexed message first, or the first indexed message first, or the message with the most matches first... those who wrote the code would be able to tell us, but until they do, we're in the dark. Which of the found messages (if any) then takes focus depends also on so many factors as to be unpredictable, except that conducting the same search from the same starting situation on the same set of data should produce the same result. I can only say that attempting to perform some action on search results while the search is underway is asking for trouble. It's like putting the flaps up before the aircraft's got up to take-off speed and then wondering why it crashed at the end of the runway. I carry no particular banner for Microsoft, but I do get peeved when people ascribe a problem to mechanical failure when it's been caused by pilot error. -- Noel "tester" <tester@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:A3CF97A4-2BE0-4707-9C1F-C135E1CE3337@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: Potentially Dangerous Search Pointer Bug Trying to reproduce your issue, I'm guessing that as soon as you see the message you want, you are selecting Actions, Forward As Attachment. If you double clicked the found message to open in its own window and then selected to forward as attachment, OR if you used Actions, Forward, it should be obvious if you got the wrong message. Prudence would dictate you use either of the latter courses. That way you get to verify the contents of the message being forwarded. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "tester" <tester@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:A3CF97A4-2BE0-4707-9C1F-C135E1CE3337@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: Potentially Dangerous Search Pointer Bug This is obviously, but obviously a beta product. If you really did yourself "irreparable harm" in the way you say, well then you put your own foot in it. Let others learn from your mistakes. I was laughing at you.
