Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

The newsgroup was meant to accept newsgroup posts, not email.

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

News servers don't use HTTP on port 80.
They use NNTP on port 119.

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

Your reply does make sense!!

However, I am just clicking on New button in Windows Live Mail Desktop
(This opens a new "News Message" in compose mode.)

What am I doing wrong?

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

I'm not sure how the communities support features [CSF] servers
operate, but it looks like messages are indeed passed to them via
HTTP if the option to use them is selected; the server then forwards
the message with the additional communities information to the news
server. The OP's error message seems to be indicating that if the
HTTP link fails, the message will still be posted but without the
additional info. The log should carry details of the transactions. I
can't check, because I've given up on this particular set of
'features'.

If you examine the headers of the OP's last few posts, you will see
that ones posted successfully with CSF give the proxy 127.0.0.1 as
posting host; the ones that didn't still have CSF reference data,
but give his own IP address as posting host.

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

When the focus is on a newsgroup, clicking "New" does indeed
start a news message (not an e-mail) to that newsgroup.

You can eliminate the error messages by disabling the "Communities"
features, which tend to be buggy: Tools, Options, uncheck "Use
Communities support features."

Incidentally, the "Desktop" part of the program name was dropped
about 14 months ago.

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

Thanks for your suggestion Gary, I would certainly like to try it.

One funny thing I noticed.

Tools->Options
Click on the ? icon on the top right hand side.

Expected: The mouse icon would change to a ?. If we click on Use Communities
support features., then a small tool tip would be displayed which would show
us information about the item we have selected.

Actual:

Internet Explorer launches and the following link is displayed
http://help.live.com/help.aspx?mkt=e...rytype=&query=

Incidentally , I was not able to search for Use Communities support features
in the HELP!!!!!!!!

I am beginning to like Windows Live Mail!!!

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

WLM doesn't have a local help file. It's all web based. So the "?"
does the same as clicking on Help, it goes to the WLM help web site.

I couldn't find anything on the Communities feature either in the Help
web site.

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

Gary -

what replaced Desktop

We can't use just use WLM, the HTTP version is referred to as WLM

I suggest WLM Client for what was Desktop and WLM Online for the HTTP
version but they both can't be *&^%#$ WLM

Re: Error while sending email to the newsgroup

I never found anything useful in the help - see recent post

Communities is an MS only feature, you will only see it if you use Microsoft
Communities newsgroup server

It puts a button in Message header pane to supposedly allow you to Rate the
posts, but I don't think it works.

If you want to experience the Communities features in their full blown glory
use the Discussion Group edition of the newgroups in your browser, use IE7
or IE8 if you have have it, dont bother if you use IE6 or Fx its not a
pleasant experience in those browsers - Maxthon may be OK, not tried it.

This newsgroup url is

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&lang=en&cr=US

some newsgroup have more than "Was this useful yes/no" which is all this
one has - the IE 8 beta had suggestions as well as questions and comments -
but its off the air so I cant give you the url

in fact most of technet is off the air - has something happened in Seattle
or what
