RE: Integrating Contacts with Windows Contacts

Is there any way to get rid of the messenger contacts in XP, because I can
find the contacts folder which I had to hunt down in my documents, but it's
read-only, and whenever I try to change it, nothing happens, and I take a
look and it has changed back. I had my contacts nicely organized in outlook
express, but now it seems I have 2 of everyone, and a bunch I don't want
because the messenger contacts are there.

Re: Integrating Contacts with Windows Contacts

First point: you seem to have responded to a thread that is more
than three months old, so I can't see what you're replying to unless
you have quoted the whole thread in your post.
Second, your post seems not to have anything to do with the subject
of the thread, since you mention XP whereas the thread deals with an
issue that only occurs in Vista.
Third, it's not absolutely clear what you are trying to do. If you
"get rid of the messenger contacts in XP", how are you going to get
in touch with those people using Messenger?

Perhaps you're annoyed that contacts you only correspond with by IM
also appear in your Windows Live contacts that you see when you use
Windows Live Mail. That is the whole point of Windows Live -
integration. A contact is a contact, however you choose to get in
touch with him - by email using WLMail or Hotmail, by IM or by phone
using Live Call.

Here are three suggestions:
(1) Visit your Hotmail account on the web, go to Contacts, select
Options > Clean up duplicate contacts and get rid of the duplicated
entries. Don't delete your Messenger contacts here - if you do,
they'll disappear from Messenger too.
(2) In WLMail, select Contacts and in the View menu, select List
view and deselect Show preview pane. Right-click on the column
headings to select a sensible set, but be sure to include Windows
Live Messenger address (and Other Messenger address, if there are
any of those). Then click the little arrow next to New and choose
Group. Call it something like Messenger. You can then click on the
Windows Live Messenger address column heading to sort your contacts
by that address. Mark all of those that have one, right-click and
select Copy contact to > Messenger. Now do the same again to set up
a group called Mail and copy all the contacts that don't have a
Messenger address to it. Then sort out those that are both Mail and
Messenger contacts and make sure they're in both groups.
(3) If that doesn't meet your requirements, you could try (in the
Contacts window) File > Export > CSV. Then, back in the main window,
select [Tools >] Options > Connection > Stop signing in. Open the
Contacts window again (it will probably be empty of contacts),
select File > Import > CSV and import from the file you just saved.
Sort these contacts by Messenger address again and just delete all
your IM contacts.
Now you only have non-Messenger contacts.
If you ever need to use any of the other features that signing in
makes possible (read about signing in in Help), then just click the
button at the top right-hand corner of the main window.
