Windows Live Mail

I have been using Outlook Express ever since I have had my Dell 2300, 1.8
Ghz, 256 mb ram and found it easy and fast to use. Now I am told to switch to
Windows Live Mail. I find it extremely slow. Pointing to a header, it will
take minutes before it repaints the preview screen. Also the application has
tendency to go to sleep while I work with other applications and becomes
"non-responsive". The "End Now" box comes up, which doesn't really end it. I
assume that I have not enuogh memory for WLM to function properly. It's too
late for my Dell to buy more memory.
So from OE to WLM : a giant leap backwards!

Re: Windows Live Mail

If you were "told" to move to WLM because you are using Hotmail HTTP
access, the demise of HTTP support in OE has been delayed indefinitely.
For more on that, see:
Hotmail changes for DAV
http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/...708!5745.entry
http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/...708!5359.entry

WLM is definitely more sluggish than OE. I have 384 MB of RAM and WLM
is very slow to load. Although once loaded it runs reasonably well.

Re: Windows Live Mail

Thanks for this Michael, it is good news. I have switched to WLM and it
merged all my address books into one. I have 965 addresses and it is a mess.

I will be going back to OE.

Again, thank you.

Re: Windows Live Mail

How many address books and identities existed in OE prior to installing WLM and allowing it to import your OE wab file(s) ?

I currently have two address books but have had three at times past. The
main address book has 97 entries and the other one has the rest, 985 minus
the 97 I suppose although I didn't think there were more than 600 in the
second address book.

Is it possible to make another address book in WLM?

I would like to keep the two lists separate.

While messing around I re imported the contacts and instead of overwriting
the current list I now have two of all the addresses.

Thank you for jumping in to help Winston.

Re: Windows Live Mail

WLM is multi-dimensional in how it handles Contacts..
If you use a Live ID and sign-on with that Live ID when opening WLM it will use the contacts for that Live ID(sync'd with the
Hotmail Server).
If you do not use a Live ID sign-on, then WLM default Contact list is used(it is independent of the Live ID online contacts).

All email accounts use the current available Contact list(respective Live ID signed-on or the default list)

To answer your question..can you have two, yes, in fact more than two is possible.....****but only within the constraints**** of
the above(respective signed-on Live ID or the default)

Duplicates can be cleaned up one of two ways..manually or wiping and reimporting...Note...you are still bound by the
synchronization aspect when deleting(it may take a while for sync to finalize between WLM and the server and Messenger is
present/used)........and possibly more importantly in your case, the constraints of the signed-on Live ID or default contacts with
respect to the final import location.

Re: Windows Live Mail

Just to elaborate on winston's advice, the fact that contacts are
linked to a Live ID means that you can keep separate lists by using
different Live IDs. I have one for Family, one for Work and so on.
It's quick and easy to switch between them - but they won't
synchronize with each other, so if you have a contact common to two
lists, you'll have to make any amendments in two places.

If they're Hotmail-type Live IDs, contacts will synchronize with
those maintained on the Hotmail servers, providing a useful backup
in case of accident. There is an efficient tool for weeding out
duplicate contacts at http://contacts.live.com . Look for 'Clean up
duplicate contacts' under Options.
