| Guest | Importing OE messages to Windows Mail Is it actually possible? I'm trying to move up from XP Home to Visa Ultimate x64 (I think that's the name). I got Windows Mail going and after killing UAC so I could think without having to click something every minute I was able to try importing my Outlook Express message store into Windows Mail. I'm trying it over the network. When I browse to my Outlook Express message store I can find the Outlook Express folder at the end of that long path but the Import app for Windows Mail doesn't see anything inside the folder. Not one thing. I can look via the network(a workgroup type) and see the files but the import app doesn't see a thing. What gives? Does this just not function or am I holding my mouth wrong. I even wised up and copied the store folder onto the new machine and the wizard still can't find the message store files. I did notice one thing that looked different from when I had XP Pro x64 on the new machine. (It was able to import the messages with no problems by the way). The Windows Mail wizard never ask me for any identities like the XP Pro x64 Outlook Express wizard did. Funny innit? The old outdated Outlook Express can import messages with no problems, but the fancy new whiz-bang doesn't seem to be able to. cmsix |

| Guest | Re: Importing OE messages to Windows Mail Windows Mail can import OE messages. - Vista's Windows Mail has a bug....ensure that when browsing to OE's store that Windows Mail doesn't insert a duplicate folder name at the end of the path. e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\<your windows logon id>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{6FD910CC-5BD6-423E-BA5E-CFBB2B006F15}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Outlook Express ****Note the duplicate Outlook Express at the end**** remove it Also it might be appropriate in Vista to leave UAC enabled and approve the prompts to UAC when importing to your permission related Vista profile. For future Windows Mail questions since this forum is for Windows Live Mail[WLM] an alternate email client to OE(Xp) and Windows Mail(WM, Vista) consider posting to the appropriate newsgroup(see links below) Windows Mail Newsgroup ===================== Nttp: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...ows.vista.mail Web-interface: Http http://www.microsoft.com/communities...ows.vista.mail Good luck! -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "cmsix" <cmsix@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:eDdcFxp0IHA.1628@xxxxxx

| Guest | Re: Importing OE messages to Windows Mail Hi, cmsix. Yep! I had exactly the same problem when I tried importing from OE to WM (over a year ago). I was stuck at the crossroads of WM and UAC. I lost count of how many times WM told me there were NO messages in that OE folder. But good old Dir in Command Prompt had no trouble in seeing them. Since I'm just one guy with one computer and no network, I had never had to learn anything about "permissions" and "ownership". But Vista forced me to learn. After banging my head against the "no such files in that folder" message several times, I finally found that I had to give myself permission to see into that OE folder. I've forgotten how to do it (you probably already know how), but I finally took ownership of that whole OE Store Folder tree. After that, WM could easily see those files and import them. Other techniques include using other tools (such as Windows Explorer) to create a new folder that you own, copy the old OE .dbx files into it, then let WM import them from there. And, as Winston said, THIS newsgroup is for Windows LIVE Mail, which I like better than the default Windows Mail. To get your own free copy, go to: Windows Live Mail http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview In the meantime, peer-to-peer support for the original WM is at the other NG, at the links Winston gave you. When you install WLM, WM will seem to disappear, but it's still there; only its shortcuts are deleted and you can still run it from the All Programs menu. In fact, you can run both WM and WLM side by side, since they will keep their Message Stores separate. A common practice is to run them both for a while, setting both to leave messages on the server for a couple of weeks, while you decide which one to use in the future. RC -- R. C. | Guest | Re: Importing OE messages to Windows Mail Sorry about the previous blank message and thank you for the information. Thanks also for the pointer to the correct group. I just got this machine going yesterday and haven't been able to find the correct software for Wireless Intellimouse Explorer II, thus I don't have the magic magnifier button. Since like other versions, Vista Ultimate x64 still isn't shart enough to increase the font size inside dialogs when you tell it to use a custom font size in the video properties, whatever it is calling them now, this group was my closest guess from text I couldn't barely read. Sorry to have darkened you door and I shall try not to bother you again. cmsix "...winston" <winstonmvp@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:49DCCB9A-CEAF-4542-A9C4-5653987BCCF7@xxxxxx
