| | Using Live Mail but Outlook Express want to compact folders!! Have XP Pro and SP3. Recently moved to WLM. Movd accounts and messages all running fine. Dont like some of the features - have multiple accounts and never know where junk is - but that is not my problem. The issue I am having is that I still get a pop up that OE6 wants to compact folders. Well that is strange since I am not using it and havent done since I transferred. It happened again this morning. I opened Live mail and the Live mail splash screen appeared followd by a dialog box that OE6 wants to compact folders. I said Ok, it did it and after about a minute I was back on track with LIVE Mail. The old .bak files were duly put in the recycle bin and I have deleted them. Any ideas as to why OE6 still wants to get involved? Thanks |

| | Re: Using Live Mail but Outlook Express want to compact folders!! We've seen a rash of this problem lately. Installing SP3 seems to be the common trigger. But only some people seem to be affected. Something seems to be triggering OE to open/close repeatedly and then hitting the 100 close compact trigger. But it seems to be different program for different people. Uninstalling OE may or may not help. At least one person reported uninstalling OE, but the problem remained, yet another reported that uninstalling stopped the problem. One person reported that uninstalling Windows Desktop Search stopped the problem, but others with the program aren't seeing any problem. Another person reported that updating his version of Nero stopped the problem. And at least one person has reported that uninstalling the driver for the IBM Rapid Access keyboard helped. The "IBM Rapid Access" keyboard driver (RAKDLL.dll) is found in some IBM/Lenovo laptops as well as standalone keyboards for desktops. The other common thread is that the problem seems to affect people who aren't actively using OE. Some people have never used OE, others used to but are now using a different program, such as Windows Live Mail, and now rarely if ever open OE. Microsoft is looking into the issue, but as far as I know, the underlying cause hasn't been identified. You'll find more on this issue if you visit the OE newsgroups. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "YRAGDRAW" <YRAGDRAW@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:A3ADD22F-73AA-4F00-950B-97A209FB3EF1@xxxxxx Quote: > Have XP Pro and SP3. I have microsoft mail. All XP users have OE. So a more useful answer would respond to Michael's other points, e.g. whether you have Windows Search 4.0 installed and whether you use it. In any case you can stop seeing the message (at least for a while) by allowing the compaction to occur or by opening OE and doing a manual Compact All Folders. E.g. Run... msimn.exe and press Alt-F,F,F For most reliable results I would do that only when OE is open at its root (press Ctrl-y,Home,Enter) and in a Working Offline state (Alt-F,W). | | Re: Using Live Mail but Outlook Express want to compact folders!! It seems somebody has hijacked this question and talking about Microsoft mail. My original post was about WLMail and OE6 and compacting folders. I guess I will have to wait for MS to come up with an update. Interestingly enough, my history goes back to knowing the guys who wrote Intermail, I also used it on early Apple Macs (128K Plus , SE, etc), and correct they sold it to Microsoft and came out rebranded as MSMail. Actually not all that different to todays WLmail which is pretty much what you would expect from a program that sends and receives mail! Good old days. I digress, I guess I could just eleimainateOE6 and the old mail folders - but its a nice backup!. Gary |

| | Re: Using Live Mail but Outlook Express want to compact folders!! I have been running a MAPI program for 18 months no problem till I installed this silly SP3. I was getting the compact messages warning everytime the program read a message, ie 3000 per day. After wasting some hours changing the Identity of outlook and trying all the solutions listed on various forums I found a great solution: Click control panel, select "Add or remove programs" then select SP3 remove it and no further trouble. |
