Exporting Messages from OE to WLM

Ok, I played around with WLM and it was pretty much a clone of OE I
thought. Since my ISP provides such a paltry amount of disk space I thought
I'd get a Hotmail account and divert my mailers to that account.

Being rather fastidious I did want to move or copy my messages from OE to
WLM. No problem, WLM has an import function, so I successfully imported all
my mail folders from OE to WLM.

This is where it gets interesting. WLM doesn't import the messages to any
particular account but to Storage Folders>Local Folders. OK, dragging and
dropping a folder from there under a particular user doesn't work. Next.

I should be able to select messages and use the right-click Move or Copy
function, right? Well, sort of. WLM pukes up "An unknown error has
occurred" and game over.

Every time I try to migrate to a new mail client this is where I end up.
Thunderbird was the same.

So is there a way to move those messages without an error happening or do I
just stick with OE?

Re: Exporting Messages from OE to WLM

What type of mail account are you trying to move/copy the messages to?
POP3, IMAP or HTTP (Hotmail/MSN)?

For IMAP and HTTP you shouldn't try to do that. Your mail client (OE,
WLM, etc.) mirrors what is on the mail server. So once you connect to
the mail account, WLM should synch with the mail server. No need to
have imported the messages from OE.

With a POP3 account, it should be possible to do that. You mention
trying to drag folders and that didn't work. Have you tried dragging
messages instead?

I think I've seen some messages saying that WLM has problems with moving
or deleting folders, but not with moving all the messages they contain.

I was trying to move messages from a POP3 account to a Hotmail account which
I guess is one with a live.ca ending. (This just gets more confusing all the
time.)

True. My POP3 mail server contains messages from the last few weeks only
because my ISP is very stingy with disk space. I wanted to import messages
going back to the beginning of the year, ones no longer on the POP3 server.

I found what the problem is. By a process of elimination I discovered that
messages with very large TO: lists failed to move/copy. Some people sent me
e-mails with 100-200 people in the TO: list for god's sake! Instead of
skipping over those bum messages the move/copy dies. If you exclude those
messages the move/copy works fine.

I realized it was useless to divert all my mail from my ISP to a Hotmail
account because I use mail rules extensively to organize my e-mail. Without
that my Inbox would become an unmanageable mess. I can easily check my
Hotmail accounts with a program like Pop Peeper, so WLM is redundant, so I
think I'll just uninstall it. MS really blew it as far as I'm concerned.

to re-write the program.

Anyway, I found that WLM has nothing that I can't do by other, simpler
means, so it's history. All in all I think it's a disappointing effort.
