"Reading pane" has disappeared, found hiding under Message list

AHA! I finally found the right forum for my question!

I am a computer professional, trainer for nearly 20 years, and this has me
stumped.

My Hotmail settings are for the reading pane at the right; so I have three
"columns" with the list of folders, list of messages, and the reading pane.
Normal.

This morning in Hotmail I accidentally clicked on the window pane divider
bar between the list of messages and the reading pane, and the list of
messages disappeared.

I can choose Options, Reading Pane Settings: Right, Bottom, or Off. Bottom
and Off function like normal, but Right only displays the message and no
reading pane. In "Right" mode, there is no difference between Full Message
View, and not (when you click the X).

An hour of clicking and experimentation shows that I CAN click and drag the
divider bar between the folder list and the message pane, and there hiding is
the message list... but as soon as you release the mouse, the message pane
covers it back up again. Double-clicking does nothing.

I WANT MY THREE-PANE VIEW BACK: folder, messages, reading pane.

Can you help me? Thank you!

Actually, you didn't find the right forum.
This newsgroup deals mainly with the Windows Live Mail desktop email
program. Hotmail issues are better handled in the following newsgroup:
microsoft.public.msn.discussion

This is the Windows Live Mail (Desktop) forum. Traditionally, many Hotmail
questions wind up in microsoft.public.msn.discussion, by default I suppose.
Your question is about the Hotmail web site?

Have you tried resizing the Window? I am thinking that here could be a math
error in the calculation of the pane sizes, where the message pane width is
incorrectly rounded down to zero. I have followed your steps and I cannot
reproduce the bug. My monitor size is 1440x900.

Good luck,

Earle

Re: "Reading pane" has disappeared, found hiding under Message list

Rather than send you to public.msn.discussion, I'll answer it here and set follow-up to that forum.

Try this sequence..
Close IE
Delete all Live.com, Msn.com, and Hotmail.com cookies
- accomplished via IE properties or third party software
Add Live.com to IE's Privacy tab and set to allow.
Do not add Live.com to IE's Trusted sites(if present remove it)
Logon to the hotmail account via http://mail.live.com
Wait for it to load
Click on Options/More Options/Reading Pane Settings
Toggle it off then click Save
Click on Mail
Click on Options/More Options/Reading Pane
Toggle it 'on', click Save
Try the resize feature with your mouse cursor.
