| | Password BEFORE Windows Live Mail will open? When I run Windows Live Mail now, my inbox opens up. To get new messages, I have set it to require me to enter my password manually. However, I would like to set a password so that the password would be required BEFORE I can see my in-box. Can I do this and if so, how? |

The login profile password is not enough, need to make email more secure. I use outlook express now, and this is the issue that I need to remedy before upgrading to Vista or W7. | | Re: Password BEFORE Windows Live Mail will open? Tru, but if you have a user profile password that you have logged in, it would also be nice to have the Mail password so the application itself is secure. I don't want to have to log out, or lock my user profile constantly, but do want my emails secure. Just seems so simple to add a password when the app opens. Many other common programs have this security already such as OE, Outlook, etc....... Carl "Ron Sommer" wrote: Quote: > The OE password is easily bypassed. When you are done with your User session, log off. Windows 7 are operating systems. MSOE Identities, while they can be "password protected", offer limited email security; limited to locking out another user from accessing your email servers. All locally stored email are accessible to any user with access to the console. All that is necessary is to execute the mail import function, and point it at the MSOE message store for the other users. The only way to secure your email from the access of prying eyes is to create local User accounts in the OS, and activate the password requirement for those accounts. This will actually lock users out of access to your files; all of them. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

Many other > common programs have this security already such as OE, Outlook, etc....... read your email then you finish, and go to "File | Exit and Log Off Identity". All of your email is secure against prying eyes, right? Wrong! Joe Smith comes along, and opens MSOE. He gets a list of Identities to choose from, but needs Carl's password to access the "Carl" Identity. How can he read Carl's email? If he doesn't already have his own Identity, he just creates one. Logs in and ... "File | Import | Messages ...". From the list of e-mail programs, he selects, "Microsoft Outlook Express 6". From the "Import" menu he selects, "Import mail from an OE6 store directory. He then browses to "Carls" OE6 message store location, and selects all of the folders he sees. Now all of Carl's email is imported to Joe Smith's Identity. No password needed. That is the way MSOE "security" works. If you don't want Joe Smith importing all of your private correspondence into his MSOE Identity, you'd better lock him out of access to your files. To do that, you definitely must log off your Windows User account. MSOE does not provide for file access permissions. Neither does Windows Mail, nor Windows Live Mail. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| | Re: Password BEFORE Windows Live Mail will open? I understand all that and how it isn't the best security, but along with the profile logins I would just like the simple security of the application to have one level of login security to guard against the simple users. | | Re: Password BEFORE Windows Live Mail will open? The point is, even if there was a mail password, it would not be secure. Emails are unencrypted text files. Anyone who has access to your Windows user account also has access to reading your emails. What do you want to be lulled into a false sense of security? -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "csm" <csm@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:21A2BF77-E5DF-4A15-812E-11716E1B6E48@xxxxxx Quote: > Tru, but if you have a user profile password that you have logged in, it > would also be nice to have the Mail password so the application itself is > secure.
