Compacting The Database In WLM

Is it not either desirable or possible to do a MANUAL compaction of the
database in WLM?

I'm used to doing it in OE several times a day.

Re: Compacting The Database In WLM

There's no way to do a compact in WLM while it's running. You can set
WLM to prompt to compact on each close, or every Nth closing in Tools,
Options, Advanced, Maintenance, Compact on xxx runs. The default is
100.

Unless you are sending/receiving tens of thousands of messages per day,
doing multiple compacts per day seems a waste of effort. When I used OE
I did a weekly compact just before my weekly backup.

I'm guessing that a manual compact command was removed because of the
possibility of compact getting into trouble if a send/receive occurred
while compacting or some other user activity (e.g. viewing messages).
By doing the compact as part of the close down process, that's
eliminated.

To force a compact on next closing, copy/paste the following lines into
Notepad

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
; Trigger Compacting in Windows Live Mail (WLM) on next close
; Sets number of WLM closes since last compact to 100 (hex 64)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail]
"Compact Check Count"=dword:00000064
; Assumes Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance, Compact on xxx runs
; is set to 100 (hex 64) or less
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\News]
"Cache Compact Runs"=dword:00000064

Save as a REG file (e.g. WLM-Compact.reg).

Double click the REG and reply update the registry.
On the next close you will get prompted to clean up disk space.

Re: Compacting The Database In WLM

There isn't a "compact now" button, but you can effectively compact on
demand by setting the frequency of "compact the database on shutdown every
xx" to 1.

Yes...

I wanted to keep things tight and avoid corruption problems. I did, for
many years.

I concur. There are many Nanny Features in WLM clearly designed to protect
people from their own stupidities. I discover a new one every day.
However, I sympathize with the developers who know just how dumb and
careless users can be.

Thank you.

As another option, how about just setting the _Close On Nth Closing_ to ONE?

Recte:

Thank you.

As another option, how about just setting the _Compact On Nth Closing_ to
ONE?

Rather than making Registry Changes.

Re: Compacting The Database In WLM

Setting that count to 1 means you'll get prompted to compact on every
closing. If that's what you want fine.

I just want to compact before my weekly backups, so the REG file lets me
trigger the compact just when I want to do it.

Re: Compacting The Database In WLM

Reasonable...

I've set my counter at three however -- may move it up to five.

I like to keep the message store tight.
