| Guest | Windows Live Mail Let me start with any apologises if this is posting in the wrong area. I have a few issues with WLM (Version 2008/Build 12.0.1606) and can use any help that can be offered. 1 - Is slow to load and, once loaded, tends to "not respond" for an irritating length of time. Any solutions...? 2 - Do not want MSN Messenger to load with mail but, no matter I unclick, it does. Please advise... 3 - I need to change my "designation" storage drive location for mail messages to a MY BOOK but this does not seem to be a go. Have read the instructions offered by WLM but WLM does not cooperate. Is there an easy fix to this? I would prefer to use WLM exclusively but I have just about reached my frustration level. Had been told WLM is easy to use...much easier than OE...but don't see it. Is there an Idiot Guide? *Frustrated in Texas* |

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail WLM does not require Messenger. I have neither MSN Messenger nor Live Messenger on my computer and WLM loads and runs fine. Of course if you "need" a Messenger program this won't help. I'm using Outlook for mail for now, WLM sometimes for newsgroups. When a new version and hopefully bug fixes come out, perhaps I will try it again for mail. | Newbie | Re: Windows Live Mail They also said "you will find no problem moving over to WLM from OE/WM 'cause it is just the same", which it manifestly is not. The rules don't work the same: email addresses are not read, only names. There is a lot of baggage with each account having it's own section plus a "quick" section plus a storage section (totally rearranged from original WM folders) plus... It also seems to take ages to respond when I click Send/Receive. The entire look and feel is different in fact... ![]() I like his ironic touch at the end " Is there an Idiot Guide?" Very apt since only an idiot would bother using this app for any length of time. Unless MS actually address the problems... |

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail 1) It's definitely slower to load than OE. It appears that WLM goes through a message store data base verification when started. If you have a lot of messages or low end hardware (as I do), that can take a while. Whereas my OE takes about 5 seconds to start, WLM takes about 20 to 30 seconds to get to a point to be able to do anything and another 30 to 45 seconds of heavy disk activity before it's fully responsive. 2) The only Messenger setting in WLM that I've aware of is at Tools, Options, General 3) WLM is based on OE and I assume that it has the same limitation. The message store must be on a local hard drive. Network and removable drives are not supported. You could try the same workaround, at your own risk. That is to manually move the data then edit the registry to point to it. WLM is based on OE. They are much the same program with many of the same features and interface. I would rate them about equal in ease/difficulty. Some things are easier in one and some in the other. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Majikattic" <Majikattic@xxxxxx> wrote in message news AA5FCB3-18C8-42D0-B198-BABB36C35FC6@xxxxxx

Oh. I was guessing it was just trying to cache everything in Virtual memory so it would look really speedy on high-end machines--eg. "Vista Ready". ; )
Use Process Explorer and compare them by "Working Set Size". For WLMail that term is an oxymoron (more like Thrashing Set Size) or like I say: proof that they want us to upgrade our hardware so we can try Vista... ; |
I am guessing it is also .NET getting loaded... <eg> Wait 'til you try letting wsearch run at the same time... ; ) Actually as long as you don't mind risking the occasional crash you can ignore all that startup I/O and get started with your commands. They seem to preempt whatever all is going on at startup.
Another .NET program I believe? Process Explorer has some statistics for .NET programs I have been meaning to look into... ; ) Robert ---

playing with a few things. The Windows XP user account I have has been configured for a .NET Passport at log in, using the same email account as I have configured for the default email account in WLM. This is a local IMAP account ("local" meaning the account is running on an IMAP server on the premises).
loads when I when I select that option, or not when I deselect that option. Tools | Options | General. "Automatically log on to Windows Live Messenger".
OTOH, if this "My Book" is a network device, or removable storage device, I'd advise against it. If WLM is like MS Outook Express, it was not designed with networking, or removable storage devices in mind. If WLM should fail to find the device, it well could barf, losing your data in the process.
"easier than OE". My personal experience, and the experiences of others reported here, suggests otherwise. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum

| Guest | Re: Windows Live Mail Thank you, gents, for all of your advise and wisdom. Yes, I do want to move my email programs to an external drive (the My Book), for portablitiy and convenience. Email overload is ugly. Unfortunately it seems this is not feasible with Vista. I can definitely be put on record with stating that WLM sucks. Outlook 2007 is not much better when workng on Vista. I truly miss my OE. I can make the promise that if there is an alternate program that will work on this damn machine, that will do what I wish, I will do my level best to find it. If you have any suggestions re: that wee problem, please feel free to email me ASAP. <grin> One would think that if MS is going to come out with a system that is supposedly faster, more secure/stable, and (SHOULD be) overall better, they would cover all the bases. Some of us live and die (so to speak) via email and the Internet. When communication doesn't arrive or becomes pooched during delivery/send, the results can be painful mentally and financially. Bless you for listening to my rant. Good news is I finally was able to uninstall messenger. *wooHoo* It is gone...never to be returned. Going to drown my sorrows and begin again tomorrow. |
