IMAP POP switch

I recently upgraded to Windows Live Mail Desktop from Outlook Express 6. I
had one POP3 account and several IMAP accounts setup in Outlook Express.
During the install, Windows Live Mail imported all of the email accounts I
had set up in Outlook Express. Most of the accounts came across with no
issues.

However, one of the IMAP accounts is behaving almost like a POP3 account.
It's listed with it's own set of folders (like IMAP should be), but Windows
Live Mail is managing the SPAM for me (usually this is only done for POP
mail I think). Also, the Junk and Deleted Items folders are functioning
like the ones in "Storage Folders" (they have that little [x] I can click on
to remove all items quickly. This IMAP account is set up the same as the
rest of my IMAP accounts (it's on the same domain). The only difference is
the user name, password and account name for display in Live Mail (as far as
I can see). I kind of like having this POP-ish functionality for my IMAP
account. Is this a bug, or is there a way I can have all of my IMAP
accounts behave like this?

My POP3 account is behaving partly like an IMAP one. During the import, a
set of folders was set up under the account name (just like normally happens
for IMAP). I have seen a couple of messages should up in these IMAP-ish
folders. However, most of the time, the emails to this POP3 account show up
in the "Storage Folders", as POP3 accounts usually do. I like keeping all
of my accounts separate so it would be nice to be able to have POP3 accounts
handled separately like IMAP accounts are (rather than all being merged
together into my "Storage Folders"). I assume I'm seeing a bug here though.

Re: IMAP POP switch

Chances are, you had some message rules in OE6. Perhaps those
were carried over to Windows Mail. Delete the message rules, and
your POP mail should automatically go to individual account inbox folders.
New POP mail doesn't normally go into Storage folders, unless you have
message rules redirecting it there.

Re: IMAP POP switch

You are correct. I did have a rule on the POP account. With the rule gone,
the messages are appearing in the individual account's inbox, as you said it
would.

So now I just need to figure out what's going on with my one IMAP account.
For all of my other IMAP accounts, the local (I.e. Live Mail Desktop's) Junk
email filtering does not run. The local filtering just runs for my POP
accounts and this one IMAP account. I do have Junk Email filtering on my
mail server, but it's not nearly as aggressive as Live Mail's filtering, so
this one account has a lot more filtering done. Also, for this one IMAP
account, the Junk email and Deleted Items folders have that [x] button to
allow quick removal of all contained messages. I thought this was a
POP-only feature. On this one IMAP account, the Deleted Items folder icon
is the recycle bin (like with POP3 accounts). All my other IMAP accounts
use a 'regular' folder icon for the Deleted Items folder. I can't find any
setting in the UI that enables me to make my IMAP accounts have this extra
POP-ish functionality. Is there a registry setting that does this, or is
this a bug? I kind of like the way this IMAP account is working, and I'd
like to set up the rest of the IMAP accounts in the same way. The IMAP
account that I'm seeing this with is not my default mail account, and it's
not the first (or last) account listed in the UI. It seems random that this
one IMAP account works differently.

Thanks,
cpnet

Re: IMAP POP switch

Glad to hear your POP issue was resolved.
Sorry, I have no IMAP expertise, so hopefully another responder
will jump in here.

Re: IMAP POP switch

As a test, I deleted on of the IMAP accounts imported from OE6 by the WLMD
install (one of the ones that does not have the 'POP-ish' delete and junk
mail folders with the [x] button for quick deletion of all messages, and
client junk mail filtering). I then rebooted* and set it up again myself in
WLMD, using the exact same settings. After doing this the account had the
'POP-ish' functionality. So it seems that this isn't functionality limited
to POP - it's just a case of something going wrong in the import from OE6.
It's a pain to have to set up all of my IMAP accounts manually, but at
least I'll get the new functionality.

*In OE6 I found I had to sometimes reboot to really get rid of an account
and all of its locally stored messages, before setting it up again. I'm not
sure if WLMD is the same, so I rebooted just in case.

PS: I sent this message yesterday, but for some reason it didn't show up in
the thread. I sent other messages to this newsgroup yesterday, and the rest
of them are all visible.

Re: IMAP POP switch

Each account in WLM has its own unique folder containing the default folders(inbox, sent etc) and user created folders and any
existing messages.
Deleting an account in WLM is bit more significant than OE or OL. All folders are wiped. If content is not retained on a remote
server(Hotmail, Imap, or Pop3 leave message on server), all may be lost unless previously backed up.
