Vista Contacts Doesn't Open Up Default E-mail

I'm using Vista Home Premium x64 and recently installed Windows Live Mail. I imported the "current user's" contacts into WLM and have made WLM the default e-mail app.

However, if I open up Windows Contacts, select a contact like "Jones.contact", right click and select Action/Send E-mail it opens up a new Windows Mail e-mail instead of WLM.

Any ideas how to change the "Send E-mail" action to launch a new WLM e-mail?

    TIA

WLM does not use Vista's Windows Contacts.

You might wish to check Vista's defaults settings..
I've two units running Vista with WLM installed on each.
One one Outlook2007 is the default client, on the other WLM is the default client.
Right clicking a contact in the Windows Contacts folder opens the default client(not Windows Mail).

Thanks for your help. WLM is the default mail for all actions except when right-clicking on a Contact.

I can't figure out how to get Contacts to recognize WLM as the default e-mail app.

To ensure that WLM has all its defaults, do this:
Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
    "Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows
Live Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

    Gary,

Thanks for your reply. WLM is set to all its defaults and is the default e-mail app for everything but Windows Contacts.

I just tested your scenario, and it did open WLM for me.

Try repeating my advice regarding Default Programs, except
choose Windows Contacts. When I did, it said Windows Contacts
had 4 of 5 defaults (all except .vcf).

Note: for continuity, kindly quote the message you are replying to.

Re: Vista Contacts Doesn't Open Up Default E-mail

To set/reset Windows Live Mail as default in Vista:

Ensure Windows Live Mail is set as the default e-mail program in all the relevant places as follows:

Firstly, Microsoft Outlook can silently steal some of the the e-mail defaults when you open it, so if you have Outlook installed, uncheck the option: "Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar" at Tools->Options...->Other [tab] in Outlook.

In Vista, apart from making WLMail the default Mail and News handler at WLMail's Tools->options...->General [tab], also set all its defaults through: Start Orb->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set programs [button]->Set your default programs->Windows Live Mail, and Windows Live Mail (news)->Set this program as default [button] ("this program has all its defaults" should be indicated above this button).

Also, follow that up by going to: Start Orb->Control Panel->Internet Options->Programs [tab]->Set programs [button]->Set program access and computer defaults->Custom, and check "Windows Live Mail" under "Choose a default e-mail program :"

If the above process does not fix it, then it would appear the operating system, for some reason, is not able to change the relevant registry Value Data. You might try first making another e-mail program (such as Windows Mail) the default, then go back and make Windows Live Mail the default.

Re: Vista Contacts Doesn't Open Up Default E-mail

Thanks for everyone's help. I've had no luck in changing this weird behavior: In my user's Contacts folder when I click on "E-Mail" on the toolbar or right-click on the contact and select Action/Send E-mail, Vista still tries to open up WM instead of WLM. Ironically, if I click on the contact's e-mail address on the right side of the folder window then WLM does launch.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled WLM, set WM as default, rebooted, set WLM as default and rebooted with no luck.

WLM is the default e-mail app for every action but the two I noted above.

Can't find anything in the registry that might be the culprit (although I know it's gotta be there somewhere).

    Thanks again for everyone's assistance.

Re: Vista Contacts Doesn't Open Up Default E-mail

Just to ensure we're on the same page: If I open up Windows Live Contacts within WLM, right-click a contact and select "Send E-mail" then a WLM e-mail launches as it should.

However, if I open up Windows Contacts (C:\Users\[my user]\Contacts) or an Explorer window at C:\Users\[my user]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Contacts\Default, right-click a contact and select "Send E-mail" then a WM e-mail launches.

So, for some reason Windows Contacts (the default app for opening .contact files) thinks that the default e-mail app for sending messages to .contact files is WM.

Now, is there a way to set the default app for opening .contact files as Windows Live Contacts rather than Windows Contacts?
