Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

Guys smarter than I,
I just installed Windows Live Mail. When I click on Windows Live Mail quick
launch I get box that says please wait configuring Windows Live Mail. After
10-15 seconds this disappears but live mail never opens.
What am I missing?
Thanks guys,
Bob

Re: Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

Sounds like it was not properly installed.
You may have to uninstall & reinstall:

Re: Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

Try again, if it fails, press Control Shift Esc, and end process on wlmail.exe, then try again.
If it still fails, consider remove(Add-Remove[XP] or Program and Features[Vista]) and reinstall WLM.
Note: you may not have to download WLM again, the msi installation file may be on your machine
- Ensure hidden files are viewable and show operating system protected files is enabled in Windows Explorer folder view options.
Look for the msi file in this folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources
The Windows Live Mail msi file if present is:
Install_{184E7118-0295-43C4-B72C-1D54AA75AAF7}.msi and is 12,733 kb(U.S. version)
If present, after removing WLM via Add-Remove, double click to install.

Re: Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

Winston-Did not solve issue after complete uninstall and reinstall. Still
does the box configuring windows live mail without the program opening. When
I reinstalled and closed the install window the Windows Live Homepage opened
but this had link on it to only hotmail. Clicking quicklaunch still only
opens configuring dialogue box but not WLM.

Re: Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

Is your Operating System Vista?

And do you have Administrator privileges?

Event Viewer (Start->Control Panel->Classic View->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer ...->Windows Logs->Application->Level = Error ...) might give some indication of the problem. It could be due to lack of permissions.

This link offers a fix which has helped many people overcome this problem:

http://andystechfun.spaces.live.com/...7%217278.entry

Try accessing the registry key mentioned with regedit before taking on Andy's method of accessing it otherwise.

Andy's fix is basically to add your user name to the list of user names in the Permission control panel, and give yourself 'Full Control' of the key and its subkeys.

If this fix overcomes your problem, it would really help us understand this issue if you could indicate what permissions (compared to below) were allocated at the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\WLMail.Url.Mailto

Right-click 'WLMail.Url.Mailto' key->Permissions...->Advanced [button]->Owner [tab].

For me the following 'Group or user names' are allocated permissions (I have Administrator privileges, and installed WLMail through my account):

Administrators (<computer name>\Administrators)
CREATOR OWNER
SYSTEM
Users (<computer name>\Users)

SYSTEM has Ownership (->Permissions...->Advanced [button]->Owner [tab]), whilst each has the following permissions (...->Permissions...->Advanced [button]->Edit [button]):

Type | Name | Permission | Apply
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Allow | Administrators | Full Control (Allow all) | This key and subkeys
Allow | CREATOR OWNER | Special (Allow all) | Subkeys only
Allow | SYSTEM | Full Control (Allow all) | This key and subkeys
Allow | Users | Read (Allow: Query Value, Enumerate Subkeys, Notify, Read Control) | This key only
Allow | Users | Special (Allow: Query Value, Enumerate Subkeys, Notify) | Subkeys only

Also, does your computer have a computer name? (Control Panel->System->Computer Name

Re: Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

Hi Peter,
Thanks for reply. OS is Vista and logged in as Administrator.
Warning 7/31/2008 7:51:47 AM MsiInstaller 1001 None
There were few of these but noe of errors indicated lack of permissions. I
will check out the link you provided.
Thank you,
Bob

Re: Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

Peter-I must be dense. I went to website and download PSTools but cannot
figure out how to run psexec. Error when I try to use run command or cmd.
Sounds like if I can do this would solve my issue.
Thank you,
Bob

Re: Windows Live Mail Not Opening When Clicking On Quick Launch

I haven't used PsExec before now, so I only know what I have just worked out.

PsExec is a command line tool, so you need to run it, along with its arguments from an elevated Command Prompt.

Since you need to direct the command to run psexec.exe to the folder containing psexec.exe, the easiest thing to do is place psexec.exe into your C:\Windows\System32 directory.

Once you do that, you need to open an elevated Command Prompt: Start->All Programs->Accessories->Right click 'Command Prompt'->Run as administrator->Continue [if prompted by UAC].

Now, after the command line: C:\Windows\system32> in your Command Prompt window, type (or paste in) the command: "psexec.exe -s -i regedit" (without the quotation marks).

Regedit should then open, apparently allowing you to access the registry key in it that you were previously denied access to.

However, many people trying to resolve this problem with WLMail reported that they did not need PsExec to access the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\WLMail.Url.Mailto

So first try to access it with Regedit. To do this, go: Start->Run...->[Type in] regedit->OK [button]

Then, in Regedit, navigate to that key and right-click it->Permissions...

If Regedit will not allow you to do that, then I suppose you will need to use PsExec to run it (Andy used Regedt32, but Regedit should suffice).
