The menu overlays the box so you can't see what you are selecting via the keyboard. Clicking outside the menu, e.g. in the Size box lets you see your selection. Also, Esc doesn't just close the menu; it closes the whole composition window! (?) Alternatively, use the Format menu. E.g. Alt-o,F,V,Enter would work on my system (XPsp2.
