| | File transfer wizard I used the file transfer wizard on XP to move my files to a recently paved fresh new install of XP. I see all my files except the email that was in my "storage folders". How do I tell the new Live mail to find my old "storage" folders. I still have the transfer file so I can re-run the wizard but that is extremely time consuming. Hope you can help. |

Not sure how current and effective the XP File Transfer Wizard is, since its knowledge may predate WLM. -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "franla"no spam"1917" <franlanospam1917@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:5D30EB5D-21B2-4974-9C72-0D39415C5DEA@xxxxxx Quote: > I used the file transfer wizard on XP to move my files to a recently paved > fresh new install of XP. | | Re: File transfer wizard If you formatted, where were the files transferred. Spare drive, external drive. WLM unlike OE, or Outlook does not use a single storage file for individual messages. It does have file message store that acts as a pointer to the individual folders and files. WLM Messages saved in the Storage Folders subfolders(Drafts, Sent, etc, user create folders) are stored by folder name and then by an individual file for each message. Extensions for file types are *.eml for Mail; *.nws for Newsgroups. The Storage folders are found under your user profile: C:\Documents and Setting\<Your windows id>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Storage Folders Have your searched for those file types(eml, nws) on the media to which the File Transfer wizard wrote. If not present they may have not exported using the File Transfer Wizard(iirc the XP FTW preceded knowledge of WLM and its storage system). -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "franla"no spam"1917" <franlanospam1917@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:7F7BAB17-8980-45E0-8C21-3F4571124887@xxxxxx Quote: > No I did not export the files. | | Re: File transfer wizard I transfered the files to an external drive using the wizard. Then I reinstall the OS which re-partitioned the drive. So the files are gone unless they are in the file (volume) that the wizard creates. I will re-transfer the files to a new User ID on the new install. I'll then look for the files with the information you've given. Thanks for that. I have an incremental back-up from a ways back so that means I'm not totally hosed, yet. But I'll have a lot of culling o mail to do again. Despite the fact that the transfer wizard predates the Transfer Wizard, I'd have to say this is a huge hole for people to fall in. Afterall, the files are in the directory (user's folder) that contains the vital stored email. So any idea what utility would work better for this task? | | Re: File transfer wizard Two options for WLM. For future insurance backup the messages using WLM's File/Export Messages or a 3rd party utility. The former is covered here: How to Backup Windows Live Mail Accounts, Contacts and Messages http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com...90CA!174.entry Gary M. covered the latter in a post in this thread. -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "franla"no spam"1917" <franlanospam1917@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:EDEA4441-DC49-45E2-B55C-622FCB5DB379@xxxxxx Quote: > I have an incremental back-up from a ways back so that means I'm not totally > hosed, yet.
