| | Re: Emails disappear during CD burn Thank you for your reply. FYI, I am using XP Home and Norton 360. I had already checked the Storage Folder where I initially created a File Folder to store them, and, alas, they are not there. The Headers only appear when I view Storage from within WLM. I do have ZAR recovery program which I use, so I will see what I can dig up. I did a full BackUp including this folder about a month ago, so maybe some of my emails are salvaged there. I guess I just need to COPY rather than MOVE, and will do as you suggested and place them elsewhere other than WLM Storage prior to burning. Sigh...after 30 years, it still doesn't get any easier, LOL. Thank you again... | | Re: Emails disappear during CD burn Good luck with the data recovery. Now I am getting the impression that you were *moving* messages out of your WLMail Message Store using Windows Explorer, and that you even created a new folder in your Message Store using Windows Explorer. You should create any storage folders under 'Storage folders' using the Windows Live Mail interface (right-click on 'Storage folders'->New folder...->...). You can then use WLMail itself to archive your messages by dragging them into your storage folder within the WLMail interface, or right click [message]->Move to folder...->... If you cannot see 'Storage folders' in WLMail, go to View->Layout...->Folder pane->Show Storage Folders [check]. Moving messages directly out of (or around in) the Message Store using Windows Explorer is never a good idea because the database will still have record of the messages in their original location, which means that the messages will still be listed in the WLMail message list but cannot be opened, as you have experienced. You should be able to delete the erroneously listed messages in WLMail to clean up the database. If you had WLMail open when you tried to move messages out of the Message Store using Windows Explorer, that may explain why they could not be moved. Norton Antivirus has been considered incompatible with Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail. Thus, users of WLMail are generally advised to completely uninstall Norton (using the tool available through http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&src=symsug_us to remove all traces of the software) and install better behaving free alternatives such as Avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) or AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/) for antivirus needs. At the very least, it is recommended that any antivirus program be uninstalled then reinstalled using the Custom install option, and unselect the e-mail scanning component for installation. This also applies to AVG and Avast! The e-mail scanner can cause significant send/receive problems with e-mail programs, yet it is not required because any e-mail virus that would have been detected by the e-mail scanner, would be detected by the resident scanner when the virus tries to run. See http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ning/index.htm for more information on this. -- Cheers, Peter (Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 with Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Global Design Gypsy" <Global Design Gypsy@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:8A601DE5-9ECB-4C2C-909A-03479EB87C67@xxxxxx Quote: > Thank you for your reply. > > FYI, I am using XP Home and Norton 360. > > I had already checked the Storage Folder where I initially created a File > Folder to store them, and, alas, they are not there. | | Re: WLM and Norton 360 I'm really comfortable with N360 and was not aware of the conflict (I didn't think that was possible in today's world, LOL). Since renewal is coming up in another month, I will wait to uninstall and then custom install the newer version. I was hit by that nasty pseudo-MSN upgrade last March, even with all my protection and firewalls, spent 3 months cleaning up the mess, so I hesitate to dump N360. You gave me some solid advice. Yes, I was moving mail out via Explorer, altho I did create the folder within WLM Storage prior to moving. I thought this was the only way to archive out to CD. I have 5 email accounts and like to run them clean, but as I need to keep emails for business purposes I archive out to CD once a month, just to take the load off WLM and my PC. FYI, I am running an eMachines T6212 with 3GB RAM and will be upgrading to a VelociRaptor drive shortly, possibly maxing out my processor also, to increase speed and have more breathing room. I use a 1TB external for photos and a 500GB external for project files. Yes...I'm a geekette... Uninstall N360, LiveUpdate, and any Norton Add-ons via Add/Remove Programs. 2. Download/run this removal tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 3. Reboot, then install N360 (2009). 4. Make certain that email scanning is disabled: It provides no additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary: <QP> Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. </QP> http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02111812533106 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Global Design Gypsy wrote: Quote: > I'm really comfortable with N360 and was not aware of the conflict (I > didn't > think that was possible in today's world, LOL). | | Re: WLM and Norton 360 The recommended way to archive messages is to use WLM's export feature: File, Export, Messages.
