Error Msg trying to send internet email

Hi,
When I try to send an email via internet...like a website support or cust
serv email, I immediately receive the error message: Could not perform this
operation because the default email client is not properly installed.
In Internet Explorer, in Set your Default Programs, Windows Live Mail
Desktop is not in the list, so I cannot select it. Why isn't it there?
In Set Program Access and Computer Defaults, the Email program is Windows
Mail and Windows Live Mail Desktop is listed next to Enable Access under the
Microsoft Windows tab. Under the Custom tab, Use my current email program is
selected and Windows Live Mail Desktop has a check mark next to Enable
Access to this Program.
I hope someone has an answer for me because this is so annoying!! I have
googled this message and have not come up with any answers that involve my
particular situation.
Thanks in advance !

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

Is Windows Live Mail that program that you want to use? If so, then
click the radio button in front on WLM on the Custom tab and click the
OK button.

Enable access doesn't make a program the default, it just allows you to
use the program manually.

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

Hi Michael,

I have done what you suggested many many times, but it always goes back to
"Use My Current Email Program" and WLM is Enable Access to this Program. I
can't understand why WLM is not checked as the default program. Do you have
any other ideas? I would really appreciate if you could figure this out!!!
By the way, my OS is Vista Home Premium, 64bit.
Thanks so much,
Eileen

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

Hi Eileen.

The problem is that you are still using Windows Live Mail desktop 8.0.1226 Beta, which became redundant a long time ago.

Upgrading to Windows Live Mail 12.0.1606 will solve your problem, as this was a bug in previous versions.
Note that here is no more 'Desktop' in the name of this program, and it is no longer in beta.

Now you are wondering why you did not know about the update, and why was it not automatically updated through Microsoft Update.

The earlier Beta versions were not updated automatically, however the recent versions have been, so once you install the current version, you should be advised of any new versions available through Microsoft Update.

The WLMail team blog at http://morethanmail.spaces.live.com/default.aspx also keeps us informed about updates.

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

Sorry, I forgot to give you the download location for the latest version of Windows Live Mail.

http://get.live.com/WL/config_all

The download is currently an installer for the Windows Live suite of programs. You select what you want to install, and when you run the installer it will download those programs and install them.

I recommend that you completely uninstall the old beta before installing Windows Live Mail, as the registry and the Message Store is arranged differently now.

Please see this blog entry for a detailed explanation of how to do a complete uninstall: http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com...90CA!226.entry

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

It's normal that when you come back, the settings say "Use My Current
Email Program". That you went selection process is sufficient if that
were the issue.

I hadn't noticed that you are using a beta version of WLM. As Peter
says, you need to update to the released version which came out almost a
year ago.

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

Well, Peter, this is a fine state of affairs ! It really wasn't that long
ago that I downloaded WLM Beta. Unfortunately, I forgot where. The reason
I decided to go with WLM is because Outlook 2007 was driving me crazy....it
was always doing something to slow my computer down. I couldn't understand
why in the heck it couldn't just sit there...anyway, I let it go and went
with WLM.

I can't thank you enough for figuring out my problem !

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

Hi Peter,

Well, wish me luck, the following does not look easy ....by the way, for my
Contacts, the EXPORT feature is missing from the File menu. I would be
happy to just print out my Contacts, but I can't see that option either.
How can I export, copy or print them out?

Thank you !

Re: Error Msg trying to send internet email

Really?! That must have been a bug in WLMail Desktop.

If you have a Windows Live ID and have been using that to sign into Windows Live through WLMail Desktop, then the contacts you use when you are signed in will again be synchronised with that Windows Live ID (downloaded to WLMail) when you sign into WLMail. So they will be available when you use that ID to sign into Windows Live through WLMail.

Otherwise, go to your old WLMail Desktop Message Store, which you will rename as part of the complete uninstall/reinstall, and make a copy of the 'Contacts' folder to somewhere else for safe keeping. In that folder, you will find contacts filed separately in a hidden folder called 'Default'. If you have signed into WLMail Desktop with a Windows Live ID, you will also see a folder named the same as that ID, and within it your contact files.

Once you install WLMail, you can double click on each contact file to open it and access the information in it to reproduce that contact in WLMail.
