| | Watched messages In Tools>Options>Advanced, I have selected "Mark message threads I start as "Watched"". If I start a new thread, my first post duly appears in read and has the "Watched" icon by it. The option clearly says "threads", not first post. However, the subsequent posts do not have this. Therefore, in the view "Hide read messages", it is not immediately obvious what replies are relevant to my original post. Is this a known problem or am I missing another setting? |

" Because you don't have a "bug" unless your symptom is reliably reproducible or at least easily explained. ; ) BTW please note that my suggestion to use Synchronize All to avoid a problem associated with the Watched feature is a carryover from experience with OE where I once took the trouble to diagnose the cause of a symptom of missing messages, which I subsequently facetiously referred to as OE's "Loose Catch-Up" feechur. That bug was supposed to have been fixed in later patches to OE6sp2 but seems to have been regressed in the port of OE code that WLMail. represents. The feature that you are trying to use is new in WLMail and I have only been speculating on what its implementation might be or what the consequences of a possible implementation might be. I suspect Noel is similarly guessing that the implementation is rule based. If you are really interested in this you could try checking if that is the actual implementation. E.g. checking the option may then just add a canned rule that the user might have coded manually. That would have been how OE users would have to try to implement the same functionality. Marking opening posts Watched for threads started by the user by a rule is easily imagined. Getting subsequent responses to that posts marked as Watched by the normal propagation of that attribute is also easily imagined. But if that first message does not arrive before its replies (e.g. their headers all arrive in the same XOVER) I can imagine that that case could be problematic. I have not done the necessary testing and analysis on WLMail. I have been hoping that someone else who has more of an interest in this feature will step up and do it for all of us. ; ) FYI Robert --- |

I am pleased to say that the problem now appears to be fixed. I am assuming that this is because I have set synchronisation to "All messages" and have unticked "Use newsgroup Communities support features". The reason I say this is because my other two threads "Watched messages" and "Is there a problem with this NG's server?", still do not carry on the watched attribute when replied to (including your latest post). However, after making above changes, in the thread "Ping: Noel Ildhund re: watched messages", all replies are marked as watched, even though I still have view set to "Hide read messages". Thanks very much for your help and advice. |

The Watched attribute should be associated with the header and in fact, having a header marked Watched and using a synchronize command has the same effect as using All Messages or just marking those particular messages for download. So I doubt that additionally using All Messages as a synchronization method is going to having any effect on your original problem symptom. Quote: > and have unticked "Use newsgroup Communities support features". That feature's a mystery to me. Eliminating the effects of that feature would at least set things back closer to the original implementation. Quote: > > The reason I say this is because my other two threads "Watched messages" > and "Is there a problem with this NG's server?", still do not carry on > the watched attribute when replied to (including your latest post). So, it's almost as if that message isn't really marked Watched then? It just looks as if it is but because it isn't really it won't propagate? BTW what happens if you copy such a thread to new local folder? E.g. is the Watched attribute on the first message lost? Watched attributes finally given to its replies? Also, in the course of re-reading this thread I took the time to analyse Erhard's trace and can see that it would certainly be an example of what you are seeing, even when the first message and its replies are seen in separate transactions.
