| | WLM Spam Filter The Spam filtering that WLM does seems to work quite well. So well, in fact, that I am tempted to set the progam for immediate delete of suspected Junk mail. I understand that the utility is not Bayesian; that is, it does not 'learn' from the user's actions, so the question is, how does it work? Are there updates that classify certain words or phrases, or is there any input from the user aside from blacklisted senders? Thanks. |

| | Re: WLM Spam Filter Jim, I would be very hesitant to "immediate delete" just yet. I have found messages from safe senders list in the junk mail folder. These were "legitimate messages" I wanted. It hasn't happened very often, but it has happened. Better to get and not need, than to not get and need. FWIW, I have no clue how it works, other than ''pretty well" ;-) "Jim" <Jim@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:374F5C4A-3EE6-400B-AFCB-FD47AC2D40B0@xxxxxx The Spam filtering that WLM does seems to work quite well. | | Re: WLM Spam Filter Thanks, BChat. I have found legit messages in Junk also, but very few. On one work-related account I get nearly 200 Spam messages a day and, on that account, almost never a non-Junk message. You're right, though, about need/get. | | Re: WLM Spam Filter Sometimes I'll get a message in the Junk folder from someone I thought was on the safe senders list, only to find that it is from a different department of the company I had safe listed. I am now checking message a little more carefully and adding "domains" to the safe list instead of just the sender. This has helped. To date I guess I have gotten all the messages I was supposed to, I'm still alive and on the outside of prison. | | Re: WLM Spam Filter You'd better indicate which version of WLMail you're using; now there are two current ones, the answer might be different depending on which one you have. In 12.0.1606, the junk filter used is the same as that for Outlook, using Microsoft's own SmartScreen technology. The filter didn't get updated monthly, though, like Outlook's does, but perhaps that will change. It doesn't learn from your input, but it does rely on reports from millions of Hotmail users around the world. -- Noel "Jim" <Jim@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:374F5C4A-3EE6-400B-AFCB-FD47AC2D40B0@xxxxxx Quote: > The Spam filtering that WLM does seems to work quite well. | | Re: WLM Spam Filter Great response Noel. The filter we have is based on SmartScreen. http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/safe...default.mspx#2 We have updated it for the beta and going fwd (after ship) will update it via Windows Update monthly; just like Outlook. Hot tip: If you have reporting enabled in safety options, anytime you mark something in your inbox as junk, you're contributing to the efficacy of the updated junk mail filter. We sent telemetry back into the hotmail system used to do the machine learning, which is in turn used to create the junk mail filter. And yes, your privacy is assured using this system. | | Re: WLM Spam Filter Over the last year Live Mail's junk mail filtering has improved dramatically. It's good to see =) When I first started using the services getting legit emails from contacts marked as spam was pretty common, now I can't think of the last time this has happened. One question though, how come when you do mark a Junk email as 'not junk' it isn't automatically moved to the inbox?
