| | Solve a CAPTCHA to send mail?! Why am I asked to type characters as a confirmation when sending mail? It says that's to prevent automated programs from sending mail/spam. I could see this if WLM detects I'm sending a lot, but I've only sent 1 email this week, and that was it. Outlook has had a detection feature that would blog automated actions for years and years! If I have to type a confirmation every time, I'll move back to gmail online and gears for local access. -- Shawn Keene shawn.keene@xxxxxx |

(that you didn't provide here) telling you to enter the CAPTCHA. Could be the occasional intervening security web page that shows up when logging onto a freebie webmail account. They want to check if a human is using that freebie account. The client is probably not coded to handle the intervention. You have to use the webmail interface to your e-mail account to see the intervening security page, enter the CAPTCHA code, and get logged in. Your local e-mail client will work thereafter until whenever someday later they decide to stick in that intervening security web page during login. Could be you sent e-mail to someone that is an irresponsible and lazy a^^hole by using challenge-response to eliminate. They dump their unknown sender e-mails back at what they *think* is the sender to have them qualify they are a human by sending back the characters in a CAPTCHA image. Since such recipients that use the C-R scheme have no proof of who is the real sender of an e-mail, they'll send challenges for spam back at invalid accounts (wasting resources at the domains to check if the challenge is deliverable) or slam innocents with their challenge (because the spammer used the e-mail of someone else). Because they send challenges out as fast as they receive spam, they are themselves spammers (i.e., they spew out challenge-spam). As such, they qualify to be reported to the public DNS blacklists to get themselves blocked by anyone using those blacklists. |

I am not yet certain WLM means Windows Live Mail and really present or in use, i.e. It could mean WLMsgr(which many refer to as WLM) which can logon an open Hotmail. -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "Gary VanderMolen" <Gary@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:eT1pKflMJHA.5840@xxxxxx Quote: > So, Hotmail does that, even in WLMail? > I've never come across it, but then I don't use Hotmail for email. > Another reason for me to avoid it. > > -- > Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) > > > "...winston" <winstonmvp@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:Olh%23x7kMJHA.5232@xxxxxx Quote: >> Logon to Hotmail via mail.live.com and enter the appropriate characters when prompted. >> >> -- >> ...winston >> ms-mvp mail >> >> >> "Shawn Keene" <shawn.keene@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:18BA0F90-C551-402E-84C6-89C4C1F98AA5@xxxxxx Quote: >>> Why am I asked to type characters as a confirmation when sending mail? | | Re: Solve a CAPTCHA to send mail?! Sorry forgot to paste from the Hotmail help. Cont'd <qp> Type letters and numbers from a picture When you try to sign in to Windows Live Hotmail or to send an e-mail message, you may see a message stating that you must pass a random check to confirm that your account is valid, and be presented with a picture containing distorted letters and numbers. This is a Human Interface Proof (HIP) challenge, and is used to help fight junk e-mail (Unwanted, unsolicited, or illicit e-mail or other electronic messages, including spam.) by confirming that a person, rather than an automated program, is trying to access the page. </qp> -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "...winston" <winstonmvp@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:OPa#T5nMJHA.740@xxxxxx Quote: > I am not yet certain WLM means Windows Live Mail and really present or > in use, i.e. It could mean WLMsgr(which many refer to as WLM) which > can logon and open Hotmail. > > > -- > ...winston > ms-mvp mail > > > "Gary VanderMolen" <Gary@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:eT1pKflMJHA.5840@xxxxxx Quote: >> So, Hotmail does that, even in WLMail? >> I've never come across it, but then I don't use Hotmail for email. >> Another reason for me to avoid it. >> >> -- >> Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) >> >> >> "...winston" <winstonmvp@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:Olh%23x7kMJHA.5232@xxxxxx Quote: >>> Logon to Hotmail via mail.live.com and enter the appropriate characters when prompted. >>> >>> -- >>> ...winston >>> ms-mvp mail >>> >>> >>> "Shawn Keene" <shawn.keene@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:18BA0F90-C551-402E-84C6-89C4C1F98AA5@xxxxxx >>>> Why am I asked to type characters as a confirmation when sending mail? Mozilla Thunderbird works just fine. Unless you are a "web oriented" person, in which case, you don't really want to use Windows Live Mail, anyway. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
