Creating/Subscribing to newsgroups

I'm pretty new to the newsgroups and I'd really like to make use of this
feature in Windows Live Mail.
however, I have no idea how to properly subscribe to the right NNTP server.
What do I need to do to get the right NNTP?
The problem I'm having right now is that when I post an NNTP, it says that
there aren't any newsgroups to subscribe to.
Perhaps I'm giving the wrong link? WHat kinds of links am I looking for? Any
examples?

Thanks,
J. Paolo

Re: Creating/Subscribing to newsgroups

Normally you get the NNTP server name from your ISP.
Who is your ISP?

When you first set up an NNTP account, it will prompt you to
download the list of newsgroups. After that is done, you can
subscribe to one or more newsgroups.

Links are not use for NNTP service. You will need the "Fully Qualified
Domain Name" (FQDN) for your NNTP service. If your ISP does not offer NNTP
service (Comcast, Sprint, and Road Runner have recently dropped NNTP
service; AOL dropped NNTP service roughly three years ago), you will need to
find a third party NNTP service provider. Other ISPs have dropped complete
NNTP coverage (AT&T dropped the 'alt.binaries.*' hierarchy, and Verizon only
provides access to the "Big 8" newsgroups), so you still may need the
services of a third party NNTP provider.

None of the free NNTP providers (there are still a few, but not many) carry
binary groups, that I know of. So, if you are after binaries, and your ISP
doesn't provide coverage, you likely will have to pay for it.

Examples of FQDNs for news service that I use:

msnews.microsoft.com (I use for accessing the Microsoft groups).
news.sf.sbcglobal.net (provided by my ISP, which is AT&T).
news.motzarella.org (a free service with few, if any, binary groups).

You would configure Windows Live Mail in a similar fashion to configuring an
email service with access to POP3/IMAP/SMTP servers. Use the "Account
Wizard", but select "News" instead of "Email".
