| | Importing emails to WLM using .dbx file format Windows XP Home edition on older machine 1) Backup email folders MS Outlook 2003 to .pst files. But since Outlook is not on my new computer (Vista Ultimte 64 OS), Windows Live Mail returns the error message, "Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client." So...plan B 2) Imported MS Outlook 2003 folders into Outlook Express 6. That seems to work smoothly. 3) Moved .dbx files via thumb drive to new machine running Vista 64. 4) Went to import .dbx files into Windows Live Mail. The import routine runs and appears to read the file...BUT the "Imported Folder" contains NO folder and NO email. What have I done wrong? What might be the problem? This is real 'brain damaging'. |

At least for Windows Mail, you must give it the .dbx file that indexes the other .dbx files but does not contain any messages as well as the one you want to import, and tell it where to find a single directory containing both (or possibly all) the .dbx files, rather that telling it a specific .dbx filename. Also, the .dbx files sometimes have to be made read-write instead of readonly before you can import them. |

| | Re: Importing emails to WLM using .dbx file format In WLM, the import function directs the user to select either a) All folders or b) Select folders. You make a selection, then click "Next." An import progress window opens showing the numerical count of emails being read vs. the total # of emails in the folder and a progress bar. That's it. For some reason, the emails are successfully being imported OR WLM doesn't recognize them. There does exist a small POP3uidl.dbx file and a "cleanup" text file, but nothing else I would consider an "index". But, you can't select these individually. | | Re: Importing emails to WLM using .dbx file format Yes, I did move the dbx files to the hard drive, as well as different places on the hard drive--i.e., in My Documents, Desktop, etc., hoping it would make some difference. I do see the "folders.dbx" file and assumed it represented the top "Local Folders" folder icon, which would contain the index of all folders below. I assumed it got read when the entire list of .dbx files (section "All Folders") runs during the import process. | | Re: Importing emails to WLM using .dbx file format Thanks for the link. I've read everything associated with that information. It doesn't seem to address my particular problem, but I'll try to contact one of the WLM developers directly and get an answer that way....OR I downloaded Thunderbird email portable under PortableApps.com to my thumb drive and SUCCESSFULLY IMPORTED all email and attachments (.dbx file format) into that program!! I'm going to explore the Thunderbird feature set, and may simply KISS Microsoft goodbye. Getting adequate help and support for MS programs can be such 'brain damage'.
