I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and while I see an option to disable indexing
for Outlook (I also have Office 2007), I do not see a way to disable indexing
for Windows Live Mail. can it be done?

Windows Live Mail (WLM) is newer than Vista, which is probably why you
don't see any option for it.
WLM uses the same underlying file structure (EML and NWS files) as Vista
Windows Mail (WM). So my guess (I don't have Vista) is that if you see
and option to disable indexing of WM it would also affect indexing of
WLM.

I don't have Vista, so I'm guessing here. I do have WS4 on an XP
box, though, and that shows a tray icon (an irritating magnifying
glass that never seems to stop winking at me). A right-click on that
icon should bring up an option called Windows Search Options. Select
that, and the dialogue that opens should show the indexed locations.
If you then click on Modify, you should be able to navigate to your
WLMail Store folder and deselect that.
One can't help wondering why you should want to do that, though;
having my message store indexed is one of the great advantages of
Windows Search - I can trace an email or a newsgroup post in a flash
just by typing a few letters in the 'Find a message' box.

Wisdom and experience come with age, they say, but I wish I could
remember the darn question
Indexing doesn't work that way in Vista, at least not by default, which is
how I have it running I guess.
As for the why, does it matter? Evidently somebody thought it might be
reasonable to want to disable Outlook mail indexing; why shouldn't the same
apply to Windows Live Mail? In my case, I like Outlook getting indexed, but
not Live Mail.
