Display contacts as ... in the address book of Windows Live Mail (

Is there any way I can display the addresses in the contact list
(addressbook) of Windows Live Mail (WLM) 12.x in the same way as in Windows
Live Hotmail, i.e.

First name, Last name [Forename, Surname]
Last name, First name [Surname, Forename]
Last name, First name (Company) [Surname, Forename (Company)]
Company (Last name, First name) [Company (Surname, Forename)]

I am looking forward to any advice on this matter.

Thanking you in advance.

Kind regards.

Re: Display contacts as ... in the address book of Windows Live Mail (

Depends a bit on what you mean by Address Book and Contacts List.
There seems to be no official naming policy, but it would make sense
to call the list you get in a Message window when you click the
'To:' button your Contacts List, and the separate window you get
when you select Tools > Contacts (Ctrl-Shift-C or the second icon at
the bottom of the Folder pane) the Address Book.
In the Address book, you can list contacts however you like if you
have View > List view selected. Right-click on the column headings
to select the ones you want, and left click on one of them to sort.
In a contacts list, you will normally get a first name and a last
name in the order specified by 'Show names as first last' in the
Address Book View menu. If a contact has no first or last name, what
you see in the Contacts List varies according to what fields are
populated for that contact, but it will always be 'Name'. This field
is generated by WLMail from the data available in a specific order
of priority which I can't quite remember in detail - I'm sure you
can work it out for yourself.

Re: Display contacts as ... in the address book of WLM 12.x.

Thank you for the comment. I understand what you mean. As I already thought,
it is not possible to show the company name (e.g. "Piriform Limited") in the
"To:"-section of the message in WLM 12.x as in Windows Live Hotmail.

In WLM 12.x it is only possible, unless by hand, to the show the "First Name
Last Name" or the "Last Name First Name" in the "To:"-section of the message.
The same applies to the Addressbook.

In (old) Windows Live Hotmail it was also possible the show automatically
the company name in the "To:"-section of the message [e.g.: "Piriform Limited
(First Name Last Name" <FirstName.LastName(at)Piriform.com>].
The latter has been changed a couple of days ago (in the Netherlands), which
is a (little bit) strange in business-environment.

Kind regards.

Re: Display contacts as ... in the address book of WLM 12.x.

My first comment would be 'Hotmail is not a business application',
nor is WLMail. That many people use them as such, successfully, does
not change the fact that they are both designed primarily for
private use. The alternative for businesses is Outlook.

That said, there is so much functionality built in to WLMail that it
can operate perfectly adequately as a business application. If you
really need to be able to pick contacts by company name, consider
using the Nickname field. This is at the top of the priority list I
mentioned in my last post. I have a number of contacts who work for
the same company, called Leopard. I have given them nicknames like
'Leo Andries', Leo Bart', Leo Con' and so on. All I have to do when
I want to send a message to one of them is start typing 'leo' and
their names come up in a list to choose from. So if this is
important to you, do a bit of groundwork and make the application
work the way you want it to. You could even export your contacts to
CSV, then use your favourite spreadsheet program to (a) filter all
contacts with a company name and (b) concatenate the Company, First
Name and Last Name fields into the Nickname field. Save as CSV,
delete all your contacts in WLMail and then import that CSV. Bingo!
Your Contacts List will show 'Piriform Dirk Martinussen' ready to
select.

Another trick is to set up a new Hotmail account and use that as a
Live ID for your business contacts. It's quick and easy to change
sign-in accounts, so use one for private and the other for business
contacts. WLMail is largely unaffected by this.

The possibilities are almost endless. Enjoy!

Re: Display contacts as ... in the address book of WLM 12.x.

Thank you for the comment. I understand what you mean. However, it would have
been easier if the Microsoft Windows Live Mail Team had build these features
into the application. Maybe in the future ...
