| | Re: FROM column in WLM Thanks for the followup R.C. Yes I still have the column--just nothing in it. (for all the news groups), I have re download all groups on my news server, I have selected and deselected the From column, made it max width everything--to no avail. I really like WLM-but I gota say this is some buggy stuff. Quick views break, news feeds quit updating, folder message counts are goofy. Sure would like to see Microsoft fix this stuff with an upgrade. Thankyou for your help. "R. C. | | Re: FROM column in WLM RC, I am not very familiar with how this question and answer page works, but maybe you can help me or refer me to where to go. The HELP button is useless and doesn't answer any of my questions. For my email inbox, I used to be able to expand or contract the column widths according to whether I can read the column content, like sender or subject. I can't do that now because there is no column marker on the blue bar above the first email. I tried view toolbar, which did not work. PLEASE HELP!!! I HAT THIS NEW STUPID FORMAT AND I CAN'T GET BACK TO THE OLD ONE!!! THANKS, MissTrish "R. C. White" wrote: Quote: > Hi, Hangman. > > Do you still have a From column? | | Re: FROM column in WLM Trish, Not RC, but if you are reading email in the Hotmail user interface(Windows Live Hotmail)unlike a stand alone email client it does not have fields in the message list. It does have an option to Sort the message list by Date, From, Subject, Size. To verify you are really using Windows Live Hotmail, logon to Hotmail via mail.live.com. - Once logged on do you see the Sort Field ? - Is this the location you'd wanted a 'From field to be displayed ?(if so see first paragraph) -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "Trish1" <Trish1@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:594D937B-37DC-4439-85E6-D4E34FA9AD18@xxxxxx Quote: > Hi, R.C., and thanks for the reply. | | Re: FROM column in WLM Dear RC and Winston, You have both been very kind, and I appreciate your info. Perhaps a little more info than I can handle! I tried running down 2 of RC's links, and one would not install after about 2 minutes (but still chaned my opening page). The other was, dare I admit, confusing because it led me to someone else's inbox, full of technical Q &As, and I don't know how to make that format work for my current email address. BASICALLY ALL I WANT TO DO: re-format my inbox, see below. I THINK I CAN RESTATE THE PROBLEM BETTER. I am running Microsoft Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I have Windows Live Hotmail, none of the other things you mentioned. My questions are: A. When my inbox displays, I cannot read the whole "from" column because part of the sender's names are cut off. I simply want to widen the column so I can read the whole sender's name. I'd also like to put the columns in a different order when I want to - like date, time, subject, from. The "subject" column now takes so much space it eliminates other columns to the right. (The SORT function is not helpful, thanks anyway.) The inbox you linked me to did have the columns labeled so I could arrange what column I wanted first, and how wide each column should be. That was the format I liked in my old inbox that was arbitrarily replaced. B. What did you say about moving the last 300 emails to another location? What would that do? C. What does "Live" mean, like Windows Live Hotmail, and why is it slower, especially in this new format they forced on us? iS "live" really useful if you're only using email 20-30 minutes per day? THANKS AGAIN, YOU GUYS ARE GREAT. --Trish -- MissTrish "R. C. | | Re: FROM column in WLM Wondered what happened to you ![]() Had to look back at previously read posts. WLH = Windows Live Hotmail(that would be the answer to [c]. Let's re-asses. - you are **not** using Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail(both are stand-alone email clients)that have their own unique Window and do not load a browser(Internet Explorer) when opened. Yes? - you **are** using Internet Explorer or other browser to read your mail in Windows Live Hotmail which is acessbile in a browser window after logging on with your Live ID. Yes ? - you**are** using Internet Explorer to read this newsgroup instead of news client(your message posting properties indicate that as a Yes) Since all three are Yes, then (b) does not apply for all practical purposes, unless you wish to install a newsreading client like Windows Live Mail or use the existing one present on your XP machine(Outlook Express) fyi...(b) only referred to in RC's response to the number of messages a newsreader is capable of downloading, not your use of Internet Explorer for reading the this same group. This group is available in two formats--web based with Internet Explorer(what you use) and also in a news client(what we are using). Now if that is clear, then the prior procedure of dragging the columns wider(reiterating again)does not apply to the use of Internet Explorer or any browser while reading the messages in the Hotmail web interface(in IE). - I.e. you can not widen the columns in the current version of Hotmail. You can shorten the preview pane window(which can be placed on the right, bottom or off- configure it via the Options/More Options menu). - If you wish to toggle it off you need to use the arrows(center/top)to scroll through your inbox message, another way to toggle it off/on look in the upper right and click full view or the small gray X(only present after Full View is clicked). - If you wish to use the reading pane and narrow the reading pane(place the cursor on the vertical bar directly between the message list and the displayed message, the line will become darker/bolder and then drag it to the right. Thus is you wish to widen the columns for messages, you would have to install a email client(Windows Live Mail) that is capable of sending and retrieving, viewing message in a Hotmail account. - note the current version of WLM is about a year old; a new version should be available soon, thus based on your information and my perception at this time, I would not recommend that you install the older version or even a beta version of Windows Live Mail at this time...If desired, wait until the new version of WLM is released, and continue to use Internet Explorer for reading your Hotmail regardless of the current versions discomfort. In the future use look for the one of two news groups for Hotmail questions..links to access each forum where Hotmail questions are discussed/supported are shown below for accessing the with your current method of use(Internet Explorer) http://www.microsoft.com/communities....internet.mail http://www.microsoft.com/communities...msn.discussion -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "Trish1" <Trish1@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:4A2B6EFD-8149-4E2F-9CDE-0176D2E7D197@xxxxxx Quote: > Forgot to answer b., which is WLH, is that what you are asking? > -- > MissTrish > > > "...winston" wrote: > Quote: >> a.
