Vista - security issue logging in

security issue logging in

I've just noticed a big issue in WLM desktop software. If you setup WLM to
NOT autologin it displays a username / password dialog. Trouble is, if you
click cancel it continues to load and while it does not download new
messages it does show the contents of your already downloaded messages.

This is really quick shocking and I can't see a way to fix this.

Please help.

Re: security issue logging in

Contrary to what a reasonable person might assume, the sign-in prompt
when starting WLM has nothing to do with being able to send and receive
mail or even to get into the WLM program. To find out what this does,
use Help, View Help and search for "Signin".

If you are coming from Outlook Express, where there is the option of an
Identity password that controls opening Outlook Express, that feature
does not exist in WLM, because identities do not exist in WLM. If you
want to block people from getting into your WLM, you need to put a
password on your Windows User logon and then logout of Windows when you
leave the PC.

Re: security issue logging in

That initial prompt for login is not for program access but for the
optional login to a Live ID, which enables such web-based features
as contacts synchronization. If you don't want the Live login:
Tools, Options, Connection, Stop signing in.
If you want to restrict access to your email program, log out of
your Windows user profile when done using the computer.

Re: security issue logging in

have u tried that??? if ur system is used by multiple users, with different
login ids, and if each of them use WLM, then when u login and use open wlm it
shows all there mail....

and developers if u r reading this, trust me it will be really cool if u can
add the password protect feature as mentioned by russ green.. no harm in
adding an extra feature...

Re: security issue logging in

Have *you* tried that? On my machine, with a number of Windows user
accounts using WLMail, one user cannot see anyone else's messages.
All it takes - once the user accounts have been set up - is to press
Winkey-L when you leave the machine. The next user will then have to
log on with his own User ID and thus gain exclusive access to his
own messages and other files.

Re: security issue logging in

That's impossible. WLM stores each Windows user's emails in a different
message store.

Re: security issue logging in

Thanks for all the replies but I really believe that if you choose not to
sing into live with the first prompt then the downloaded messages should be
suitably encrypted or hidden from view.

I agree about passwords on user accounts but this just seems to be a little
odd.

Re: security issue logging in

If you don't want new messages to download, in Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, Servers remove the saved password.

But as for not needing a password to get into previously downloaded
messages, it's no different than not needing a password to get into Word
to read documents on your PC.

WLM stores your messages as EML files (one per message). There are text
files readable in any word or text processor. Putting a password on WLM
itself would be of minimal security.

The identity passwords in Outlook Express are also of minimal security
value and are easily circumvented.
