| | Re: how to disable downloading attachments automatically? thank yo thank you for your help! the reason ist, my computer has limited disk space, but i have a lot of mails, i want only the texts of the mails to be saved on my computer for a quick look, but the attachments should be leaved on the server. when i want to use one of the attachments, then it will be downloaded, but not automatically like the Live Mail does, better it displays first a list of the attachments before downloading them automatically, and if i click on one item of the attachment it pop a Window up to ask me if i want to download? i think this funktion will be very useful for us. I have not jet used Live Mail to work with Hotmail, only with other emails which i dont have lots of attachments. I am waiting for this feature. Thank you ![]() "Gary VanderMolen" wrote: Quote: > Sorry, that can't be done. It is all or nothing. > Can you explain the reason for this request? Perhaps we can think of a > workaround. |

| | Re: how to disable downloading attachments automatically? thank yo Attachments have to encoded which adds 33 % to the size of the email. Saving the email in order to save the attachment will use more disk space. You don't mention how much space that you have on your email server or if the server is pop, IMAP, or http. This program works with Outlook Express and can remove attachments from emails. http://www.oehelp.com/OEX/Default.aspx What is your operating system? I suspect that you have XP or you wouldn't have limited disk space. Is there a reason that you are using Windows Live Mail? What were you using before? What did you do with the old messages in the old program? Are the old messages still on your computer? There are programs that will check for new messages and let you view messages without downloading. There are no programs that will do what you want. -- Ronald Sommer "mandarK" <mandarK@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:0F7717E8-3D5D-4EA1-8FE6-3B9D427B5B5A@xxxxxx Quote: > thank you for your help! the reason ist, my computer has limited disk > space, > but i have a lot of mails, i want only the texts of the mails to be saved > on > my computer for a quick look, but the attachments should be leaved on the > server. > > when i want to use one of the attachments, then it will be downloaded, but > not automatically like the Live Mail does, better it displays first a list > of > the attachments before downloading them automatically, and if i click on > one > item of the attachment it pop a Window up to ask me if i want to download? > > i think this funktion will be very useful for us. | | Re: how to disable downloading attachments automatically? thank yo yes, there are programs that do what i want. Thunderbird download the header and text first, when the user want to download the attachments, it does that. but Live Mail will automatically download all attachments in background, when the user starts to read the mail, regardless of that if the user will or not. that is the problem Live Mail has but Thunderbird dont have. I am using XP, the free space on my drive which contains "Documents and Settungs" is just only 1 Gigabytes, the other drives are also small, i have a harddisk of 40 Gigabytes and it is fast full. Live Mail works now with one server in the uni, not yet with Hotmail, simply because my live mail is too big with too many big attachments . But when the problem i describe was solved, i will use Live Mail with Hotmail. | | Re: how to disable downloading attachments automatically? thank yo You might, especially if you wish to continue to use WLM in its current beta or the next incarnation, consider a larger hard drive soon. The beta, if left unchanged, will use much more space for Contact storage than the current rtw/production version. As an example.. Contact storage on this unit for the rtw version with 5 Live ID and approx 200 contacts uses about 10MB for all Contacts associated with Windows Live Programs(Mail, Messenger, etc) One Live ID in use on the current beta(download.live.com) with Mail, Messenger betas installed amounted to 6 times that amount. While 60MB vs 10 MB for most is not too much of a space concern for many or yours, it might be a significant factor if you've only 1GB of free space, let alone considering any Windows performance issues related to such a small free space reserve. The 60MB vs 10MB is even more surprising since an export of all 5 Lived ID contacts to a seperate CSV file from WLM and also a composite contact file of those same 5 Live ID's and other contacts in Outlook 2007 exported to a csv file, those 6 csv files total less than 100 kb!!! I.e. email storage with or without attachments may be the least of your long term hard drive space constraints. -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "mandarK" <mandarK@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:81A1798B-3658-4343-BE8A-E8AD3B22E9B9@xxxxxx Quote: > yes, there are programs that do what i want. | | Re: how to disable downloading attachments automatically? thank you! actually, i miss this feature as well. and for the following GOOD reasons: - messages with big attachments can take long to download, and i dont want to wait that long to read a message - when i'm on the road on a 3G connection or whatever, bandwith is precious and pricey. so this is the reason i have to use webmails instead of live mail, cause i cant tell it to download attachments only when i want to actually get them. in this respect, thunderbird is better. but i hate thunderbird. so i'm screwed :P s. | | Re: how to disable downloading attachments automatically? thank you! As for your bandwidth issue, you can use a message rule that tells WLMail *not* to download a message that is over a specified size. What you can't do is just download the text of a message with a large attachment. You must download either the whole message or none of it. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Sebastian V." <nospam@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:646B1117-809E-41BA-85D9-69374E156938@xxxxxx Quote: > actually, i miss this feature as well. > and for the following GOOD reasons: > - messages with big attachments can take long to download, and i dont want to wait that long to read a message > - when i'm on the road on a 3G connection or whatever, bandwith is precious and pricey. so this is the reason i have to use > webmails instead of live mail, cause i cant tell it to download attachments only when i want to actually get them. > in this respect, thunderbird is better. but i hate thunderbird. so i'm screwed :P > s. > > "Gary VanderMolen" <Gary@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:#F550nqUJHA.4452@xxxxxx Quote: >> Sorry, that can't be done. | | Re: how to disable downloading attachments automatically? thank you! Special apps for special devices. Mobile devices often use a connection that is billed per KB. With WLM, Microsoft caters to the bulk of their customers who have unlimited broadband. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "lutherian" <Clint.Ronald.Walker@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:5c305db9-9117-4596-9689-170c4bd26417@xxxxxx Quote: > On Dec 1 2008, 7:59 pm, "Gary VanderMolen" <G...@xxxxxx> > wrote: Quote: >> As for your bandwidth issue, you can use a message rule that tells >> WLMail *not* to download a message that is over a specified size. >> What you can't do is just download the text of a message with a large >> attachment.
