| | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler If you try from Internet Explorer, does the link open Gmail or WLM? That will narrow it down as either a Windows issue or Firefox issue. If you make the change to WLM and then immediately try a link in Firefox, does it open WLM or Gmail? If it open WLM then but Gmail after a reboot, then some program is running at start up that resets Gmail as the default. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Elettaria" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:fd5d04bba94f0f5e7b029b95e55700e9@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | Vista Home Premium 32 bit | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler IE mail links open with WLM, so it seems to be a Firefox/WLM issue. Having narrowed it down to that myself not long ago, I googled the combination and was advised to install a Firefox add-on called "User Agent Switcher", as apparently there are known problems with Firefox and Hotmail these days. Unfortunately this didn't work either. |

| | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler In Vista's default programs ui, there are two ways to be the default mail client (I forget the text but it's options 1 and 3). Option #1 is SUD - Set User Defaults. This sets the user's default program. It writes to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\mail Option #3 is SPAD - Set program access and defaults. This sets the machine wide default programs. It writes "Windows Live Mail" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\mail Since this was new for vista many apps have bugs in their implementations of invoking the default mail client. Can you set WLM as the default mail client both ways and try Firefox again? "Elettaria" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:83aab06a3e423822ade1cfdb41059c97@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | Vista Home Premium 32 bit | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler I'm not entirely sure how I'm meant to implement those two suggestions, but I've tried various ways of setting WLM as the default working via the Default Programs section in the Control Panel. Is that what you meant? By the way, since I have visual difficulties and long areas of text are difficult for me to read, I'd appreciate it if you could refrain from quoting me in your replies, at least while there's only the two of us talking in this thread. |

| | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler Do both options: Option 1 (SUD): Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item: "Set your default programs." After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on "Windows Live Mail". If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults" then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow. Option 3 (SPAD): Open the Default Programs applet, then click on "Set program access and computer defaults." Expand the Custom selection, and select Windows Live Mail. Click OK. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Elettaria" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:66295839e196837871571ba30e3d1c32@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | Vista Home Premium 32 bit | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler Unfortunately both of those are the first things I tried, as I thought I'd made clear in my original post. From what I've read, Hotmail have blocked Firefox from using any Hotmail-related programmes, and nothing seems to work to get past that. |

| | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler Well, when I read your statement "I'm not entirely sure how I'm meant to implement those two suggestions" it sounded like you needed more details on how to implement the two suggestions from the MS rep. I don't use Firefox for Hotmail, but I've seen other complaints that the latest incarnation of Hotmail uses a form of ActiveX that Firefox can't cope with. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Elettaria" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:295ad94422dea475ef525ed33365969b@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler Sorry, I didn't understand that either. If the regkeys are written and other apps can launch WLM correctly I'd ask firefox about it. If they can figure out what WLM is doing badly, I can file a bug to fix it. | | Re: Problems with setting default mail handler I did, but it links to WLM web, not to WLM program (version 2009, compilation 14...). Does anyone know how to set WLM program as default mail program? In start button>propierties> etc... it doesn´t work. Thanks a lot and Merry Christmas.
