Unfortunately, this isn't the right group to discuss browser problems with
Hotmail. This group relates to the stand alone email client, Windows Live
Mail, which is not the same as the email service called, "Windows Live
Hotmail". Try this group:

<news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.msn.discussion>

Or, if you *MUST* use an HTTP client, instead of a proper NNTP client:

<http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.msn.discussion>

It is not proper Usenet etiquette to expect email response to posted
articles. Despite that you are using a Web browser to access this group, it
is still posted to an NNTP server, and Usenet etiquette still applies. Come
back to the groups to read the followups to your post.

Incorrect. The proper newsgroup would be microsoft.public.internet.mail.

Has that been officially defined anyplace?
I find that users with all sorts of client programs post there.

"Traditionally" Hotmail questions have gone to both groups.

Cheers,

Re: Why cant' I access the hotmail site to read my email?

The internet.mail group would by most appearances be the logical choice, but since its quite impossible to retrain a few hundred
million people that continue to associate Hotmail with MSn, imo...either group would be sufficient.

I usually won't redirect anyone from public.msn.discussion to public.internet.mail or vice versa when qualified people to answer
read and respond in either forum and in many cases it’s the same people, the exception would be if its related to MSn Explorer or
an MSn Premium account.

At one point in time, a variety of newsgroups for msn services(long before Live existed as the brand) resided on a separate
microsoft server covering Msn legacy accounts, software, Hotmail, dialup, etc)..Once that server and the related groups were
removed, public.msn.discussion became the default forum for anything msn related including MSN Hotmail.

With the advent of Windows Live Mail as an all purpose email client for pop3, hotmail, and imap and last year's Live Team's WebDAV
deprecation announcement (now rescinded to 'no sooner than Jan 2009') the correct newsgroup can become even more unclear to
someone(novice or using the web community interface via a browser) attempting to find the correct newsgroup to ask a question about
Windows Live Hotmail(formerly MSN Hotmail), using IE for Hotmail, etc.
- Though it should be noted, that the internet.mail newsgroup was one of the groups that Msft mentioned would be monitored
after the WebDAV announcement, how frequent may be questionable based on current perception since little Msft presence is apparent
in either group. Second, public.internet.mail appears to have less usage than public.msn.discussion, thus depending upon the
subject the latter's archive on the msft server or a web search of archived messages may produce more results on msn.public for
Hotmail related questions.

With that in mind, my approach until a few hundred million people disassociate Hotmail and MSn, if the answer is known and can be
accomplished in a short response...just answer the question rather than redirect someone to another forum for the same solution
especially when the same 'qualified answerers' frequent either group

Re: Why cant' I access the hotmail site to read my email?

What winston said.

The fact that the Windows Live (Hot)Mail team asked Hotmail users to post
there and that the team would be monitoring threads there leads me to assume
that's official.

Now why those running Windows Live Mail (desktop) post there is anyone's
guess. <eg>
