BUG REPORT: Gmail configeration

The automatic setup for Gmail accounts always uses port 25 for outgoing
email when it should be port 465.

Anyone else have this problem?

AFAIK, the automatic account setup defaults to port 25 for message
submission. Period. Despite that the recently adopted RFC 4409 (which
obsoletes RFC 2476) specifies that port 587 should be used for message
submission, and the recently adopted RFC 5321 (which obsoletes RFC 2821)
specifies that port 587 is now the preferred message submission port.

I just had a look at my latest OEConfig file that dictates the
parameters used by 'autodiscovery' for setting up new accounts.
There are four entries for gmail: one each POP3 and IMAP for both
gmail.com and googlemail.com. For three of them, the smtp port is
specified as 465; for a gmail.com POP3 account, it is specified as
25. There are also instructions as to how to set up the account at
the gmail end. If port 25 doesn't work, then somebody goofed when he
edited the config file, but I'm pretty sure that if you follow
gmail's instructions, they will tell you that it should be 465. I've
appended the entries for interest's sake - they might vary from
market to market.

Oops! Sorry about that; Ctrl-C doesn't work in my XML previewer, but
I forgot when I was copying the last entry, so I ended up pasting
the third one twice. But you get the message: no. 2 entry's outgoing
port is different from the others.

I am not familiar with this "OEConfig" file.

I just ran through the Wizard for Windows Live Mail (12.0.1606). Even
specifying that the server requires SSL, the Wizard configured
'smtp.gmail.com' to use port 25.

I am reasonably certain that Gmail doesn't work with port 25. The server is
there, but they don't accept message submission connections. At least they
didn't the last time I tested. Gmail seems to be familiar with RFC 5321, but
Microsoft is still stuck in their own Internet fantasy world.
