Period. Despite that the recently adopted RFC 4409 (which obsoletes RFC 2476) specifies that port 587 should be used for message submission, and the recently adopted RFC 5321 (which obsoletes RFC 2821) specifies that port 587 is now the preferred message submission port. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

There are four entries for gmail: one each POP3 and IMAP for both gmail.com and googlemail.com. For three of them, the smtp port is specified as 465; for a gmail.com POP3 account, it is specified as 25. There are also instructions as to how to set up the account at the gmail end. If port 25 doesn't work, then somebody goofed when he edited the config file, but I'm pretty sure that if you follow gmail's instructions, they will tell you that it should be 465. I've appended the entries for interest's sake - they might vary from market to market. -- Noel Abbreviated autodiscovery entries: <ISP dm="googlemail.com" itype="POP3" isvr="pop.gmail.com" iport="995" issl="1" osvr="smtp.gmail.com" oport="465" ossl="1" auth="1" /> - <ISP dm="gmail.com" itype="POP3" isvr="pop.gmail.com" iport="995" issl="1" osvr="smtp.gmail.com" oport="25" ossl="1" auth="1"> - <ISP id="1" dm="gmail.com" itype="IMAP" isvr="imap.gmail.com" iport="993" issl="1" osvr="smtp.gmail.com" oport="465" ossl="1" auth="1"> - <ISP id="1" dm="gmail.com" itype="IMAP" isvr="imap.gmail.com" iport="993" issl="1" osvr="smtp.gmail.com" oport="465" ossl="1" auth="1"> |

Gmail seems to be familiar with RFC 5321, but Microsoft is still stuck in their own Internet fantasy world. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
