| | WLM: No Option for Common Inbox for Multiple Email Accounts??? Until recently, I had an XP Home/SP2 Desktop, and XP Home/SP2 Laptop, both running Outlook Express. I would periodically do a one-way synch of the storage files/folders so that the Laptop was the duplicate of the Desktop, with the Desktop acting as the primary system. The desktop died, and I replaced it with a Vista 64-bit system. I then discovered OE had been replaced by Windows Mail, and that Windows Mail couldn't be run on XP Home/SP2. My previous strategy was no longer possible. It was suggested I consider Windows Live Mail, which could be run on both OS's, and I could keep the files/folders synchronized as I did before. Well, I just installed WLM on the XP/SP2 Laptop, and see that each email account I have (I use more than half a dozen for specific reasons) has its own listing and set of inbox/outbox/sent items, etc. and further that there is no common inbox (other than the option for the Quick Views folder to show email from all inboxes). Even with that enabled, and collapsing the subfolders on each email account, a large amount of real estate is taken up by listing each account separately. I searched all over, and see no way to configure this to work/look like it did in OE, with a single set of common inbox/outbox, etc. I hope I'm missing something because this looks like a deal-breaker for me. Also, if looking for a previously sent email, I'd have to do a separate search through each "sent items" folder? Much too cumbersome. Please tell me I'm missing something!! Assuming I'm not, any suggestion on another viable email application to run on both the Vista 64-bit Desktop and XP/SP2 Laptop that would function like OE used to?? -- Don remove "lens cap" for email |

| | Re: WLM: No Option for Common Inbox for Multiple Email Accounts??? You aren't missing anything. Microsoft decided that more users would prefer separate folders for each POP3 account (as it is with HTTP and IMAP), than sharing folders as OE did. For a partial workaround, you could use messages rules to move all incoming messages to an Inbox (or other folders) in the Storage folders. The one downside is there's no way to automatically move the Sent messages to a storage folder. You'd have to periodically manually move them. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Don Cohen" <doncohen@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:#oKlgQiXJHA.5476@xxxxxx Quote: > Until recently, I had an XP Home/SP2 Desktop, and XP Home/SP2 Laptop, > both running Outlook Express. | | Re: No Option for Common Inbox for Multiple Email Accounts??? As to searching for sent email, right-click on Quick views, choose 'Select quick views', put a check in 'All sent items'. The various Quick views folders take the place of the composite mail folders you are accustomed to. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Don Cohen" <doncohen@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23oKlgQiXJHA.5476@xxxxxx Quote: > Until recently, I had an XP Home/SP2 Desktop, and XP Home/SP2 Laptop, both running Outlook Express. | | Re: WLM: No Option for Common Inbox for Multiple Email Accounts??? Thanks to both of you. This is just too cumbersome to be worth the effort. I also imported all my messages, and found even that was messed up. It created one set of messages on the "root" level, but none of these could be read, with another set in "Imported Folders" where they could. I imagine I might be able to work around that problem, but I just don't think it's worth the effort. Very strange how Outlook Express very simply got the job done, with better contact handling than Windows Mail, the ability to "quick fill" from the entire contact list, and not just the most recent 29, allowed a common inbox where WLM doesn't. Very frustrating. Thanks for the help. As I posted above to Ron and Michael, there are just too many compromises and cludges to make this worthwhile. Outlook Express did the job pretty simply and efficiently. Frustrating to see how both WM and WLM both "broke" the basics. Don |
