| | Start menu now displaying new WLM icon Remember I posted a message regarding the Starts menu not displaying the new, Wave 3 WLM icon? http://tinyurl.com/9ojhte Well, I ran CCleaner, and in the Windows tab, I cleaned everything under IE, Windows Explorer, System, and under Advanced the first option, Old Prefetch data. I restarted my machine and the Start menu is now using the new WLM icon. I don't know if the Start menu is now using the new WLM icon because of what I did above, but it could've been a result of it. Thanks for all the posters that provided assistance, Sterling |

LOL (I'm not running CCleaner again just to get the new WLM icon back... well, not for another 3 to 6 months but only to clean the machine.) | | Re: Start menu now displaying new WLM icon I tried that but it doesn't include the "E-mail" label above "Windows Live Mail" :-) This old/new icon in the Start menu has happened to other posters. IIRC, one poster created a new account (I thought that was a bit drastic) and I don't remember what the other poster did. I decided to wait for the final release of Windows Live Essentials to see if the icon changed. I was actually surprised by the icon change after I ran CCleaner. I ran the program to "clean" but machine (IE's delete history feature was taking mucho time) and after a reboot, I noticed the Wave 3 WLM icon. | | Re: Start menu now displaying new WLM icon Hi Roy, Cool. But don't tempt me into taking that "drastic" step! I know it's only an icon but what can I say, I want Windows to display it. I can pin WLM and the new icon will display but not "E-mail" above it. I want "E-mail" to also appear also. | | Re: Start menu now displaying new WLM icon Hi Sterling. From what I can tell, the location for the Start Menu E-mail link icon for WLMail is taken from the Registry Key->Value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Windows Live Mail\Protocols\mailto\DefaultIcon->(Default) On my System, with the correct icon, the Value Data for the above Registry Value is 'C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe,-2' (change this Value Data if you need to). The version for my wlmail.exe is 14.0.8050.1202, and it contains the Wave 3 icon in its resources. For interest, when 'Windows Live Hotmail' is set as the Start Menu E-mail link icon, it uses the old WLMail icon, because that icon is within the resource 'hmmapi.dll,1' for Internet Explorer 7... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Hotmail\Protocols\mailto\DefaultIcon->(Default)->'ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\hmmapi.dll,1' There are other Registry Key->Value->'Value Data' that influence the default icon for WLMail in my system: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\WLMail.Url.Mailto\DefaultIcon->(Default)->'C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe,-2' HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\DefaultIcon->(Default)->'C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe,-2' No shortcuts for WLMail were created on my Desktop or Quick Launch Toolbar upon installation, but the shortcut at Start->All Programs->Windows Live points to '%SystemRoot%\Installer\{63C1109E-D977-49ED-BCE3-D00D0BF187D6}\wlmail.exe' If I change that to 'C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe', I get five icons to choose from. One of them being the Wave 3 icon. -- Cheers, Peter.R (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 14.0.8050.1202) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare --------------- "Sterling" <sterling@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:636657F9-0A5B-4DF8-AD60-473A0488E093@xxxxxx Quote: > Well, I guess I spoke too soon 'cause when I turned on my machine this > morning, the WLM icon in the Start menu went back to the Wave 2 icon! | | Re: Start menu now displaying new WLM icon Hi Peter, Thanks for the info. It looks like a lot to look into, so I'll print out your message and have a go at it. Like I said before, I think I'm done with the old/new icon -- I'll just wait for the final release of Windows Live Mail but I am curious as to why Windows is still using the old Wave 2 icon instead of the new, Wave 3 icon. I did notice that when I switch the default email to WLHotmail, the icon changed to an envelop similar to the WLM icon but was a straight on icon rather than one that was to the side.
