Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

I agree winston. I use Hotmail. I just want to disable and hopefully
eliminate Messenger in Live Mail, and don't want to impair other functions.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

I'm not sure, but I think security for email and other programs has been
breeched. I changed firewalls from AVG 8 to Comodo, and it looks like there
may be some problems now. Have had the computer with MSN for 5 years now,
and still don't know what need I have for Messenger. (I don't use IM.) But
I don't know if any programs I have require Messenger. For instance, if I'm
watching or listening to an internet feed of a radio or TV program, is
Messenger required to be active to support this?

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

"Do you wish to uninstall Messenger from your system ?"

Only if I don't need it for anything, like other programs.

"Which version of WLMail or WLMsgr is installed ?"

WLM = Version 2008 (Build 12.0.1606)

"Which Spyware might you be concerned ?"

Don't know--keyloggers, third-party logins? I use an unsecured neighborhood
wi-fi connection when available. I recently switched firewalls from Zone
Alarm to Comodo. My antivirus and anti-spyware is through AVG 8, and I have
added ThreatFire. I'm getting weird messages such as a third party is logged
into my browser (Firefox, Opera), and there's the Messenger issue on WLMail.
Messenger has installed itself as a shortcut in WLMail. Also, there is now a
sign-in when WLMail is launched, where there wasn't one before. And, of
course, I can't make heads or tails out of most of the messages that Comodo
generates. My Weatherbug icon no longer works, and I can no longer receive
internet streaming--audio or A/V. It's just a big mess!

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

Also, usually--but not always--when I try to log out of MSN Messenger, it
will tell me there are other applications logged in. Are certain programs
that I'm using dependent on Messenger to function? Which ones would they be?

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

There is no 'Messenger' shortcut at the bottom of the folder pane in the latest Beta version of Windows Live Mail. (14.0.8050.1202). I can't remember if there was one in WLMail 12.0.1606, although I recall one in earlier Beta versions.

To prevent WLMail from signing into Windows Live upon start-up, in WLMail go:
Tools->Options->Connection [tab]->Connection to Windows Live services [section]->Stop signing in [button]...

To prevent Messenger from starting automatically when Operating System starts, in Messenger, go:
Tools->Options->Sign In [tab]->[uncheck] Automatically run Windows Live Messenger when I log on to Windows...

Also uncheck:
Sign In [tab]->[ ] Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet
Sign In [tab]->[ ] Show Windows Live Today after I sign in to Messenger
Security [tab]->[ ] Open Windows Live Messenger when I click a link on a webpage that tries to interact with Windows Live Messenger

If you are not interested in Instant Messaging, then there is no need for you to run Messenger at all.

I tried Comodo Firewall Pro (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/overview.html) for a while, and found that is really for quite advanced users. In addition, its "Defence+" option can be quite annoying if left enabled, so I disabled it. I am now happy to stick with Zone Alarm free firewall, even though I was recently given Zone Alarm Pro 2009 by Check Point.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

Peter, I am using WLM 12.0.1606. There is a messenger icon at the bottom of
the folder pane. The bottom of the folder pane consists of 5 icons, from
left to right, Mail, Contacts, Feeds, Newsgroups, Messenger.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

Okay, thanks for that T-4-2.

Doofus, that shortcut button at the bottom of the folder pane cannot be removed in WLMail 12.0.1606.

T-4-2, do you have a 'Messenger' button on the toolbar as Doofus reports?

There is no 'Messenger' button on the toolbar in the latest Beta version of WLMail.

I never tried to send an attachment to newsgroups. I hope it works the same
way as in ordinary e-mails. Attachment is to show there is a messenger icon
at the bottom of the folder pane.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

No, I do not have the button on my toolbar, perhaps it was because when I
installed WLM, I declined what were offered to me except WLM. If I remember
correctly, Messenger, toolbar, and a few more options were offered. My
Messenger icon at the bottom is inactive, and if I clicked on it, a
drop-down window would tell me to install the latest WL Messenger in order
to use that icon.
