Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

Thanks for the procedures to deactivate messenger. I've printed them for
later use. From your earlier message, it looks like messenger should not be
uninstalled if I'm using Hotmail, which I am.

I'm posting screenshots of the WLMail shortcuts, and of the message that
comes up when I try to exit messenger after I've logged out. Any idea which
applications the message is referring to?

Also, I'm anxious to learn what's causing Firefox and Opera to advise that
another browser is still open (it isn't) when I close these browsers.

Also, t-4-2 - thanks for your input.

Both applications are next to useless. The build-in firewall application in
both WinXP and Vista are impressively better as they are an integral
component of the operating system.
The windows firewall deals with inbound protection and therefore does not
give you a false sense of security. Best of all, it doesn't implement lots
of nonsense like pretending that outbound traffic needs to be monitored.

worthless to continue and admitted a software-based firewall (PFW) is kind
of *pointless* to employ.

tries to replace or improve on some aspect of the security subsystem hasn't
gone through any kind of testing like we do: the SDL, automated fuzz and

If I were you I'd go you a pertinent newsgroup and/or forum, state your
operating system (incl. upgrades) and request assistance as how to develop
a security concept for your particular os and personal browsing habits.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

There is no requirement to have Messenger running to be able to access Hotmail, so by all means uninstall it if you like.

The error message you posted does indicate that you are using an old version of Messenger, since it refers to *MSN* Messenger. Messenger is now called *Windows Live* Messenger, so you might want to upgrade to a later version of Messenger if for some reason you want to start using it.

In any case, I suggest you don't start it if you are not using it for Instant Messaging.

A newsgroup dedicated to Messenger would helpful for any further enquiries regarding it.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

It is beyond my understanding as to why both Firefox and Opera web browsers return such an error when you close them.

I do not use Firefox or Opera. Newsgroups or forums dedicated to those browsers would be more helpful in that regard.

I am no expert on firewalls, and I know nothing about unsecured neighbourhood Wi-Fi connections. I just know that I much prefer Zone Alarm Free Over Comodo. I have a specific use for it over and above what Windows Vista Advanced Firewall offers me. But for most Windows Users, I imagine that Windows Firewall would be enough, coupled with a good free antivirus and spyware/adware/malware solution.

Third party firewalls can be more trouble than they are worth for novice Windows users, which is why I don't recommend them to the novice users in my family. However, I ensure that they are well protected with free antivirus/malware etc. solutions.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

I am assuming you have downloaded and are using the latest live messenger
from http://download.live.com

you can remove it from the control panel if you go to
the add remove program and select WINDOWS LIVE ESSENTIALS and then select
uninstall-change

then has an option to uninstall one of the components if you want..

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

Fyi...
The majority of the suggestions in this thread are directed at Windows Live Messenger, not Msn Messenger.
Which makes me question why you are receiving a prompt(a very old one too) about Msn Messenger.

Is MSn Premium software(Msn Explorer) installed in addition to the Windows Live applications(Windows Live Mail and Windows Live
Messenger)....or is Windows Live Mail and MSn Messenger installed ?

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

There is a nuisance(my term, others might not think so) that occurs when accessing some of the Live web services(Home.live.com,
profile, spaces etc). Upon access an instance of msnmgr.exe(Windows Live Messenger)is autoloaded(it does not open Messenger). If
WLMsgr is not present a few have reported that IE6/7 may lockup and/or multiple instances of msnmgr.exe appear in Task Manager.

Wow, so it does. I had not realised.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

Most likely to enhance the ability for the 'ready-to-use' IM client if necessary in the social networking arena. Though, like any
other application not needed, many will raise(some valid) issues about stealth loading an application not user originated etc.

Re: Can messenger component be removed from Live Mail?

Peter - Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Things seem to have gone
from bad to worse! First, let me reply to these procedures:

"To prevent WLMail from signing into Windows Live upon start-up, in WLMail go:
Tools->Options->Connection [tab]->Connection to Windows Live services
[section]->Stop signing in [button]... "

Done, thanks!

"To prevent Messenger from starting automatically when Operating System
starts, in Messenger, go:
Tools->Options->Sign In [tab]->[uncheck] Automatically run Windows Live
Messenger when I log on to Windows...

Also uncheck:
Sign In [tab]->[ ] Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet
Sign In [tab]->[ ] Show Windows Live Today after I sign in to Messenger
Security [tab]->[ ] Open Windows Live Messenger when I click a link on a
webpage that tries to interact with Windows Live Messenger "

I don't have a "sign-in" tab or a "security" tab. Could these tabs be
missing because I still have MSN Messenger rather than WLMessenger? Can you
advise how to get rid of MSN Messenger? Do I have to download WLMessenger,
or can I wait until I actually need it for something?

In addition, its "Defence+" option can be quite annoying if left enabled, so I disabled it. I am now happy to stick with Zone Alarm free firewall, even though I was recently given Zone Alarm Pro 2009 by Check Point.
