| | Inconsistent window behaviour I haven't seen anyone comment on this curious behaviour of the beta (I'm using 14.0.8050.1202 on XPSP3), so I will. In earlier versions, everything (mail, feeds, news) opened in the program window except Contacts, which opened in their own window. (Message windows are also separate, but that's what I would expect.) We soon got used to that. Then, in v.14, the Contacts icon in the folder pane got usurped by Calendar and shoved over to the right. I click Calendar and my calendar appears. I fiddle with it, then close it - and find that I've shut the program down. My instinct told me that Calendar would behave like Contacts, as an accessory to the communications bit, but it doesn't. I find this very annoying - does anyone else? On a related issue, several times I have experienced that closing the Contacts window closes everything down - no error, nothing. The whole program disappears and is not running when I check task manager. Next time I open the program, I'm told it didn't close down properly and would I like to view the message I was viewing at the time. Is it just me? -- Noel |

| | Re: Inconsistent window behaviour Hi, Noel. Yes! (I mean, No, it's not just you.) I'm glad you brought this up. Several times I have been shocked by the abrupt closure of the whole WLM program when all I wanted to do was close the Contacts window and go back to reading mail or newsgroups. :>( As it says in my Sig, I'm using build 1202 in Win7 build 6801. But your instinct is ignoring how you switched to the Calendar mode? Quote: > I find this very annoying - does anyone else? Since you opened it by using a mode button at the bottom (e.g. Mail Feeds or News) it seems consistent to me... OIC. (I never use Contacts. <w>) That's the inconsistency. It's a tool, not a mode. So, it should be in the Toolbar or in the Tools menu not down there. | | Re: Inconsistent window behaviour Hi, RC! Thanks for your comment - I'm glad I'm not alone. The problem is, I don't know how to reproduce the problem. It happens 'sometimes', but I haven't yet found a consistent scenario. And I'm too lazy a beta tester to note down every move I make... -- Noel "R. C. This is one aspect of the program that could do with a bit of work; one of the crashes I mentioned did indeed generate an event, but without a description, which is pretty useless. What I find so surprising is that here are dozens of settings combinations without a word of documentation anywhere, but your postings are telling me that this is all pretty much the same as it was in OE. So the devs are clearly thinking that if the user doesn't know what it does, he doesn't need to know and can make do with the defaults. Pretty arrogant. -- Noel |

| | Re: Inconsistent window behaviour I'll grant you that the fact that closing the Calendar closes WLM is a bit unexpected, but after you do it once, one gets used to that behavior fairly quickly. I've never experienced a closing of WLM when closing Contacts. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Ildhund" <jnllb@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:ecthh6ybJHA.1704@xxxxxx Quote: >I haven't seen anyone comment on this curious behaviour of the beta (I'm using 14.0.8050.1202 on XPSP3), so I will. > In earlier versions, everything (mail, feeds, news) opened in the program window except Contacts, which opened in their own > window. | | Re: Inconsistent window behaviour Hi, Gary - and Noel. Methinks I misspoke when I said that closing Contacts also closes WLM. In fact, the opposite is true: With Contacts open, I can close WLM and the Contacts window remains open. I can't try that trick with Calendar, because when the Calendar is open, there's no way to see the main WLM screen - no way to get to its "X" to close it without switching away from the Calendar. In other words, we can have both the Mail (or News) window AND the Contacts window open at the same time. But with Calendar, it's either Calendar OR Mail, not both at the same time - and closing either one closes both. Note that the Win7 Taskbar icons are consistent with this behavior: Right now, I see both the WLContacts icon and the WLMail icon on the Taskbar. But when I click the Calendar icon on the WLM window, the WLMail icon on the Taskbar disappears and is replaced by the WLCalendar icon. The additional icon for this Compose window remains. This is all in WLMail 1202 on Win7 build 6801. RC -- R. C.
