jpeg images garbled

all jpegs sent to me on live mail are coming up as many many lines of garbled
numbers and letters. I can go to get my mail via webmail and same images are
fine. On other occasions nothing is shown in body of email except a note do I
want to add to my contacts list. Simarily I can go to webmail and body of
email is available. running Vista on a quad 4 thanks in advance

Re: jpeg images garbled

That can happen if your anti-virus is scanning e-mail as it downloads or
you are using a anti-spam software on your PC. Some of these programs
can garble the message headers, particularly messages from certain
programs.

For example, if the sender is using Lotus Notes, McAfee SpamKiller is
known to corrupt the message headers.

Re: jpeg images garbled

It depends on how your anti-virus is set up.

If you've installed the anti-virus with the e-mail scanning component,
that will have no effect on web mail. It can only affect a mail client
such as WLM or Thunderbird.

Even there, depending on the options selected during anti-virus install
and the order the software was installed, it's possible for the e-mail
scanning to scan e-mail being downloaded into one mail client and not
the other.

If you look at the message source of a problem message (Ctrl-F3 in WLM,
I don't know what in Thunderbird) look for the presence of an x-header
naming your anti-virus (or anti-spam) program. Usually, but not always,
these programs will insert a header identifying them if they have
processed a message. If you see such a header in the WLM messages but
not Thunderbird, that indicates that the ant-virus is not scanning
messages as they download into Thunderbird.

The messages as you described is typical of corrupted MIME headers.
Even if Thunderbird is getting corrupted headers, it's possible that it
is reacting differently to the error. Different programs have different
reactions to corrupted messages. One might gloss over errors that
another considers serious.
