sync calendar between networked computers

Is there a good way to sync the new windows live calendar between two
networked computers. I currently sync the contacts by using a scheduled bat
file to copy the Contacts directory from one machine to the other, but the
calendar is more dynamic than the contacts so I'm not so sure about using the
old school approach. I use windows live desktop apps, but do not use the
windows live web stuff so I just want to sync between the 2 computers.

Thanks for any help.

Re: sync calendar between networked computers

Which version of the WLM are you using ?
Are you not using a Windows Live ID ?
If you are then you are using the 'live web' stuff..Contacts and Calendar are stored online and sync up/down.

Fyi...all contacts for a given Live ID used on any machine should be synchronized, just as your Calendar data should be available
on another machine and the web interface(after a successful sync).

Re: sync calendar between networked computers

I'm using the newest version of windows live mail (the desktop app Version
2009).

I am not using a Windows Live ID. I don't really have a need or desire to
have all my info up in the cloud (though I'm not religiously against it). I
just need to have my contacts and calendar up to date on the computers in my
home network.

It seems to me that even though it's a desktop app, the whole paradigm is
based on having info in the cloud and syncing to and from that cloud.

Re: sync calendar between networked computers

I can cover Contacts but not Calendar(don't use the latter extensively).

Contacts sync in a Windows Live ID. A Live ID is required to sync with the 'Cloud'

If a Live ID is not used, then everything is local, I.e. no 'Cloud'

A common Live ID needs to be used on WLM on each pc on your network
- thus you have two options
a. use a Live ID(create a new one) or
b. register you existing email address as a Live ID

Note: If you've already entered extensive data into the Default Contacts(available in WLM when not signing on with a Live ID) then
you may have to reenter some data when using the new/registered Live ID since WLM is limited in the number of data fields it can
import(ie..work email, other email, and a few other fields are not exported or imported.

There are some workarounds available when importing to the web interface(People is the term for Contacts in the 'Cloud'). Example a
*.csv file can be edited in Excel by adding data or field headers with data, saved in Windows csv format(not Dos) in Excel then
imported into the web interface.
As an example - Work email header in web interface export is called E-mail 2 Address. Adding that column to a WLM exported csv file
and data in each corresponding contact's row, then saved as a *.csv file will import into the web interface(contacts.live.com)and
be available after a sync in WLM. If using the same edited csv file with WLM's import function, the work email address will
**not** be imported.

To make this brief, since I believe/assume you are capable of doing some homework..
Create or register you Live ID Logon at contacts.live.com, enter a few contacts filling as many fields as possible. Export that
file, choosing the Hotmail export option. Open the file in Excel..and look at the first row containing the field headers.
You will find that the following columns field headers as an example are
Column AU = E-mail Address = personal email
Column AX = E-mail Address 2 = work email
Column BA = E-mail Address 3 = other email
Column CA = User 1 = Nickname

If editing a csv file exported from another client, ensure the same field headers are in use. As long as the field header is
present(the column location is not relevant), and the column contains data it will import into the web interface.(it will not
import into WLM).

Once you manage to get all your contacts in a Live ID and sync'ed with WLM and still desire to use that full contacts list in the
Default(no Live ID sign-on)Contacts, then post back and we can work on how to get the contacts into the Default account without
importing and retain all the data that WLM import engine can not import, though any future data entry will have to be manual and
exporting in the future will still have the same constraints.

Good Luck!
