Windows Live Mail 2009 ERROR: Outlook 2007 unable to open WLM Emai

I have Outlook 2007 at my office (I'm the employer) and I'm using Windows
Live Mail Desktop on my home computer. If I have emails pertaining to work
matters that I've downloaded on my home computer, I will just forward all of
them to myself that I will open on my work computer with Outlook 2007 so that
I may deal with them when at work. This always worked well for me with
Outlook Express and the beta versions of WLM. Just yesterday I installed the
new Windows Live Mail 2009 and I like it. As usual I forwarded any email
pertaining to work, and oddly Outlook 2007 is unable to open or preview any
".eml" attachments forwarded from WLM 2009, although ".eml" attachments from
WLM beta still open and preview just fine. I cannot find any solution for
this bug. Any ideas or recommendations of what to do? This is seriously
disrupting my work flow. Is it possible to revert back to the beta version of
WLM?

Re: Windows Live Mail 2009 ERROR: Outlook 2007 unable to open WLM Emai

WLM beta(available prior to yesterday) and WLM Live Mail 2009 are one and the same...the build number and bits in the program did
not change yesterday..the only change that occurred was the removal of the word 'beta' on the download.live.com site.

Re: Windows Live Mail 2009 ERROR: Outlook 2007 unable to open WLM

ok, then it must have been a prior build of WLM that's been working fine as I
haven't updated in several months. The previous build of WLM didn't cause
this problem.

Outlook 2007 is not able to open or preview .eml email attachments forwarded
from the new build of WLM.

Re: Windows Live Mail 2009 ERROR: Outlook 2007 unable to open WLM

Judd,
I've tried to duplicate without success by sending from two separate machine's(home) to my work machine at another location
The Home machines are using XPSp3/WLM2009/and Vista Sp1/WLM2009. The work machine VistaSp1/Outlook 2007/WLM2009. All machines are
fully updated with all WU/MU patches.

Three methods tried by sending from WLM2009 and home machine
a. Forward email as is
b. Forward as attachment
c. New Message drag and drop the *.eml as attachment

All received and open on the work machine in Outlook 2007.

What o/s and email client is installed on your work machine ?
Does the work machine have a program assigned file association for *.eml

Re: Windows Live Mail 2009 ERROR: Outlook 2007 unable to open WLM

My work machine is using XP Service Pack 2 with Office 2007 as the email
client. I did just install WLM2009 and now when I double click an email
attachment in Outlook 2007 it opens WLM2009 to view it. Which is very
inconvenient as I'd like to keep everything in Outlook where my work
contacts, calendar, sent folder, and accounts are all setup. The emails
forwarded as attachments should just open in Outlook 2007 so that I can reply
within Outlook, just like I've been doing until 2 days ago before WLM was
updated to the newest build on my home computer.

I've duplicated this with another computer on XP service pack 2 running
Outlook 2007 and also couldn't open emails forwarded as attachments from
WLM2009. The emails forwarded as attachments are working fine when opened
with WLM2009. Very strange...

Would you like me to forward emails as attachments to you and see if you're
able to open them within Outlook 2007?

Thanks for all your help. I do appreciate it.

Judd

Re: Windows Live Mail 2009 ERROR: Outlook 2007 unable to open WLM

No, I don't need the files.
When I send an attachment from WLM 2009 to Outlook 2007, the attachment opens in a window with the Office 2007 ribbon.

Sorry, its not working...you might consider contacting support for Windows Live Mail or posting in the Outlook forums.

IMO you haven't given enough information yet to claim you have a "bug". ; }

E.g. your symptom would occur if WLMail was the default Mail
handler. Check in Tools, Options at the bottom of the General tab.

Also, as Winston noted, your symptom implies something about
your file type association for .eml. A convenient way to check
that and demonstrate your case is to issue assoc and ftype
commands in a cmd window. E.g. enter:

assoc .eml

and

ftype | find /I "mail"

Note: the command pipeline is suggested because at least in XPsp3
I can't display the exact file type that assoc usually displays. It looks as if
there is a length limit on the name...

<cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
E:\>assoc .eml
..eml=Microsoft Internet Mail Message

E:\>ftype "Microsoft Internet Mail Message"
File type '"Microsoft Internet Mail' not found or no open command associated with it.
</cmd_output>

Hmm... I must have the same symptom that you are complaining about...
E.g. General tab says: Application is not the default mail handler
and yet here's what that filetype open action is:

<cmd_output command="ftype | find /I "mail"">
Microsoft Internet Mail Message="F:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /eml:%1
</cmd_output>

My default mail client is OE. So let's use its Forward as Attachment
command on one of its E-mails and then open it....
Opened by WLMail! Who knew? <eg>

Let's see if msimn.exe /reg is enough to fix that...
(Closing all OE windows first and verifying msimn.exe
isn't running. JIC. Must use Run... to do or navigate to
the right program directory because msimn.exe doesn't
occur in one of cmd's PATH directories.)

Yes. That fixed it. Evidently WLMail's install assumes
too much when it is not selected as the default program.

So, does Office also have a repair procedure too? ; )

Good luck

Winston, thanks for the noble attempt...

Well it sounds like a bug with WLM2009. Emails forwarded as attachments
from any other email program (including earlier WLM builds) still open up
just fine within Outlook 2007. However emails forwarded as attachments from
WLM2009 do not open within Outlook 2007. So my question is:

What is the new WLM2009 doing to the emails it's forwarding as attachments
to prevent them from opening in Outlook 2007?
