Cannot Send/Receive At All...Email Account Set Up Correctly

First time user in Windows Mail on new laptop. Set up email account
correctly and all I get is this message. Chatted with PureHost and was told
the email account in Windows Mail was set up correctly and that the problem
is not on their end. Tried to find out similar issues but can't locate.
Here's the message I get whenever I try to send or receive:
Account: 'Reghead', Server: 'pop.purehost.com', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '220 ESMTP Thu, 08 Jan 2009 22:14:10 -0500: UCE strictly
prohibited', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error
Number: 0x800CCC90

Any suggestions on how I fix this?

Re: Cannot Send/Receive At All...Email Account Set Up Correctly

According to this...
http://www.purehost.com/knowledgebas....bml?kbid=1610

for incoming (POP3), the port should be 110
the outgoing (SMTP) port should be 587

Tools - Accounts - (youraccount) - Properties - Advanced

Re: Cannot Send/Receive At All...Email Account Set Up Correctly

Dave, I contact PureHost directly and spent about 45 minutes with them trying
to sort out the issue. All account info is set up correctly (I have multiple
other computers running Windows XP without any problems at all). I've
reviewed a few others with problems like this on this site. The common reply
seems to be to uninstall the antivirus software. This appears to be a bit
counter-productive since antivirus software is rather necessary.

Is Windows Mail so problematic that it's really inadequate? Is there
another option (e.g., Outlook)?

Re: Cannot Send/Receive At All...Email Account Set Up Correctly

In the error message you posted, it showed that you had port 587 instead of
110 for POP3 (incoming).
Do you have them reversed?

Windows Mail is an unfinished product, and has been replaced with Windows
Live Mail. See the link in my sig.

Outlook is always an option, if you have it. Versions 2003 and newer work
fine.

Re: Cannot Send/Receive At All...Email Account Set Up Correctly

Dave, thanks for your reply. I'll double check the account information and
look at your links. If all else fails I'll head back to Outlook.

Re: Cannot Send/Receive At All...Email Account Set Up Correctly

I assure you that port 587 cannot be used to download email.
Change the incoming server to port 110.

You can't send email through a POP3 server. Your error message shows a
response indicative of an SMTP server, as well as an SMTP port number (port
587). If you can remember the following:

POP3 protocol is for receiving; use either port 110, or port 995 w/SSL (if
available).

SMTP protocol is for sending; use port 25, port 465 w/SSL (if available), or
port 587 w/TLS (if the port is available, and TLS is required).

.... you should have no trouble setting up email in any client.

This is a Windows LIVE Mail-specific newsgroup. Are you accessing the
account in Windows LIVE Mail or the application named Windows Mail in Vista?

In either case, the "incoming mail" error message is telling you that you do
NOT have the correct port selected for the incoming (POP) mail server.

PS: Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application (don't uninstall
the application). While it doesn't appear to be the cause of the error you
posted, it can cause similar problems. Email scanning provides no
additional security:
