POP3 Access to Hotmail

I just noticed this at
http://windowslivehelp.com/solutions...il-client.aspx
posted today. Trying with a spare, bog-standard Hotmail account, it
worked on blu130.

Re: POP3 Access to Hotmail

Still not getting it. They must be using a FILO algorithm to enable
accounts. This will be great for the spammers...

Re: POP3 Access to Hotmail

Works for my ancient (~10 years old) MSN account too, on col110. So
much for FILO (unless it's just because this account happened to get
farmed out to Colorado recently). Perhaps you have to earn Brownie
points by being nice to MS...
Off to try the others.

Re: POP3 Access to Hotmail

It's an "@msn.com" account demoted to free Hotmail. Maybe that makes a
difference. Odd timing, the latest OLC download is working great for me.

Re: POP3 Access to Hotmail

It was never anything other than a free Hotmail account. You can
still get them (or could, a few weeks ago). I got mine in
anticipation of the world-wide rollout of the Microsoft Network
which would bring the entire population of the planet into contact
with each other, but that never happened...

Re: POP3 Access to Hotmail

I've just established that it also works for an @live.co.uk account
on col119. You must be on a blacklist somewhere!

Your linked web site says that a Hotmail Plus account is required for
access; same as has always been the case to now, AFAIK.

Free account access? Apparently not yet:

| There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected.
| Account: 'Hotmail (1)',
| Server: 'pop3.live.com',
| Protocol: POP3,
| Server Response: '-ERR user does not have POP3 access',
| Port: 995,
| Secure(SSL): Yes,
| Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
| Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Pretty obvious, from the error message. No POP3 access for free accounts.

Re: POP3 Access to Hotmail

«To be able to use POP3, you need to have a Windows Live Hotmail Plus
subscription. However, free users can access their emails offline either
through Microsoft Outlook Connector or Windows Live Mail Client.»

False alarm!

Re: POP3 Access to Hotmail

It is unfortunate that MS is staying with SMTP on port 25,
which is blocked for most users when away from home.
