    Where are you trying to log on?

    Is this the mail account logon (Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties,
    Accounts, Servers)?

    Or the Windows Live sign-in (upper right hand corner of the screen?

    What error message are you getting?

    It would really help to know which service you are logging in to. This
    newsgroup is for discussion of the Windows Live Mail client, which can be
    use with any email service. If you are discussing Windows Live Hotmail, this
    is not the group.

    From Help for 'Windows Live ID and Account Management':
    <quote>
    A strong password:
    Contains seven to sixteen characters.
    Uses three of the following four types of characters:
    * Uppercase letters (A, B, C).
    * Lowercase letters (a, b, c).
    * Numerals (1, 2, 3).
    * Special characters (` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = { } | [ ] \
    : " ; ' < > ? , . /) .
    </quote>
    so it must be somewhere else that @, [, ] and _ are unsupported in
    passwords. When he tells us where that is, we'll find out.

    Chances are, the OP's mail provider does not allow the special characters.

    To my understanding, passwords can NOT contain " symbols ". Only alphabets
    and numbers.

    Tell that to CompuServe Classic. They *require* a non-alphanumeric symbol in
    the password. Something like 1a2b3c#4d5e6f.

    Re: Password with special characters

    The rule of thumb for a secure password is:
    at least 8 chars (more than 15 for secure local passwords)
    a mix of upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols.

    I would avoid / \ ~ * ` ^ < > & ? " ; , | and blanks since they might
    cause problems with certain apps.

    But ! $ % ( ) = * + # ' - _ . : @ should be no problem.
