| Vista Home basic 34bit on notebook, XP Home on Desktop | Even less hair after 2 days of WLM frustrations. I loved Outlook Express and it was a very reluctant move to WLM and only because I got a notebook with Vista. Now I have all our emails converted and stored in WLM but when I tried to copy them from the Vista Notebook to the XP desktop, nothing I tried would work without corruption messages and the resultant mess of truncated folder names and messages in the recovered items folder. Uggggh ! I have tried to export the messages, direct copy and paste, tried to zip the whole folder and transfer it, tried to transfer it via the USB stick, also th USB external HDD, nothing works. We have over 16000 messages in the archives and need to achieve a seamless transfer. Any ideas appreciated ! Last edited by ribbony; 01-15-2009 at 07:28 PM.. |

Windows Mail, NOT Windows Live Mail. If that's the case, you might have better luck in getting an answer at microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail instead. -- Roy Smith http://roysmith1959.spaces.live.com/ |

| | Re: Even less hair after 2 days of WLM frustrations. Not enough info.. But first one correction....WLM is not pre-loaded anywhere(yet). Windows Mail is included with Vista. Define archives. - Windows Explorer ? - Windows Mail ? - Windows Live Mail Storage folders ? Do both pc's Vista and XP have WLM installed ? Which pc has the 16000 messages ? Are the 16000 messages in WLM ? Did you use File/Export in WLM on the pc with the 16000 messages and export to a blank folder ? Then copy the exported folder to a jump drive or external drive(not a cd or dvd) Copy the folder to same machine that you wish to import the messages Open WLM on that machine and choose File/Import/Messages/Windows Live Mail/Browse to copied folder and select all folders - wait a long time(16000 messages should consume a significant cpu cycles and take a long time to reindex and build the messages store. Any attempt to abort the process will most likely corrupt the new message store. -- ...winston ms-mvp mail "ribbony" <guest@xxxxxx-email.com> wrote in message news:e2f21faff28ab853d4cac3c8da0da75b@xxxxxx-gateway.com... | Vista Home basic 34bit on notebook, XP Home on Desktop | Re: Even less hair after 2 days of WLM frustrations. WLM is installed on both computers, WM is also on the notebook but only because I can not delete it (have not tried that hard). I did a lot of editing of messages on the desktop, then copied the message store (email messages WLM) to the notebook and went away travelling for 3 weeks, no problems, the copy worked fine. It is when I try to go from the notebook (Vista) to the desktop (XP) that the problem occurs. First I tried to copy the whole email store across via the USB drive (2GB), via Win Explorer. That did not work, there was a message that some 164 messages did not have properties and would not be copied properly. The first time I chose "ignore" then on the second attempt I chose "skip". Neither worked and upon switching the email store on the desktop (renamed the original and substituted the new arrival) WLM spat the dummy and said it was corrupted. It did do a recovery process but the messages were all over the place. If I only had a hundered messages then I would just sort them out again, but 16000, no chance. Next I tried to do as you suggested, by exporting the whole message store from the notebook to the desktop, the same result, corrupted mesage store. I have tried it via the USB flash drive and also the 320gig external HDD, same outcome. I realsie that CD & DVD's make the files write protect (had that problem a long time ago with outlook express doing the same sort of transfer). The 16000 messages are on both computers though the notebook would have another 200 or so on top of that. 16000 does sound a lot but then they go back to 1994/5 and have a lot of sports club & coaching related stuff for voluntary work I have done, that I need to archive. All the trash & day to day stuff has been removed. The process of copy or exporting does take a very long time. Would Vista secure the files somehow that makes them corrupted for XP to then acces ? |
