how can you share store folder with different OS

I am setup with with multiple OS's on separate partitions. With outlook
express I could point each OS to the same store folder with no trouble. I am
having trouble doing this with WLM. All accounts become corrupt when using
the same store location.

If anyone knows how to do this, or make good old outlook express work with
windows 7 beta I would really appreciate the info.

Thanks

Re: how can you share store folder with different OS

Corruption as you found seems to be the norm...usually resulting from a variety of reasons and some probably still unknown.

Don't try to use a common store location for different OSes. I don't know of
any way to make MSOE work with Windows Vista, or Windows 7 beta; I don't
think it is possible.

Re: how can you share store folder with different OS

Hi, SkyDog.

I've been trying for about 10 years to share Message Stores between
different Windows versions - with limited success. I've not yet been able
to share WLM's Message Store between Vista and Win7 beta. If you find a
way, please let us all know.

But I would never expect to share a Store between OE and WM or WLM because
the stores are structured completely differently. OE stored many individual
messages in a single .dbx file called a "folder". WM and WLM store each
message as a separate .eml (email) or .nws (newsgroup) file. So a thousand
4 KB emails from your Mom might be stored as a single 4 MB Family.dbx file
in OE, but as 1,000 separate 4 KB .eml files in WM or WLM. You can Import
the OE messages into WM/WLM, but it would be impossible to simply "share"
the Message Stores between the two email clients.

Even with WLM in both Vista Ultimate x64 and Win7 Ultimate x64, sharing of
the Message Store doesn't work. I'm not techie enough to understand why,
but when I try pointing both WLMs to the same Message Store, it works only
until I reboot into the other OS - and then I have to deal with missing
passwords, plus weird contents in some Imported folders, and other strange
results. So far, it just hasn't worked well at all. :>(

But the Message Store can grow quite large and I hope we can eventually
share it between OSes. Even though I have lots of HD space at the moment,
having multiple stores is a waste of space. I can share Quicken by
installing it multiple times into the same "neutral" volume and folder
(E:\Quicken), letting each OS make entries into its own Registry. But that
hasn't yet worked for WLM. So I must carefully preserve the contents of
multiple Sent Items folders, be sure to "Leave messages on server" in both
OSes and boot into each of them frequently to keep each store complete, and
try to keep my Storage Folders names the same on the different OSes.

Re: how can you share store folder with different OS

Ok, so the reason I must be able to do it is because it is different
installations of the same OS on different partitions.

In this case the fact that that it is a different OS is the problem.

Thank you for bringing that to light, lol. It's amazing how frustration can
cloud one's ability to think....

Maybe.

I've not yet tried to share a WLM Message Store between different
installations of Win7 (or of Vista). During the long Vista beat, I switched
often between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of WinXP and the latest Vista
build; that was fun for a while but it got very old! I'm now happily using
a single OS (Win7 beta) practically fulltime with only occasional switching
to Vista. And I haven't run WinXP - or OE - in years.

As you probably know, Win7 comes with NO mail or newsgroup client at all.
WinXP has OE built in; Vista has WM built in. With either, we can add
Outlook or WLM or one of the many third-party products. With Win7, we MUST
install a separate mail or news client or do without any mail or newsgroups.

I do have a second Win7 Ultimate x64 installed on another partition. It's a
barebones installation and I haven't put WLM on it yet, so I can't test
whether two Win7's can share the same store. MAYBE I'll have time to try
that in the next week or two.

Re: how can you share store folder with different OS

Hello,

I have done it for Windows Mail and that works fine.
http://dechily.org/Forum_Aski/topic49.html
I'm testing a similar method applied to Windows Live Mail.
I use it for my PC a multi-boot Vista SP1, Vista SP2 and Seven.
I have had some troubles .... and I am looking for an explanation.

In the past, we found that sharing a message store always results in
the passwords being corrupted.

Actually I just discovered that using Mozilla Thunderbird which is very
similar to outlook express, allows me to have one global storage that is
being shared with my xp pro and windows 7 beta installations. (MY PRAYERS
HAVE BEEN ANSWERED)

have an answer to multiboot multi OS computing without having to store
messages on an isp or free mail server.
