| | Painful to resize inline images to reasonable size When an inline image is inserted (Insert->Inline image), WLM 2009 inserts it full-size, which in the case of images from modern digital cameras means it is probably thousands of pixels wide. It is then difficult and tedious to resize the huge image to a reasonable size (eg., 800 px wide) using the corner scroll handles (try it). Microsoft, why not place the image initially sized to 90% of the current bounds of the user's composition window? If the user wants it to be bigger, it'd then be very easy to drag it larger. (Encoding would not be affected, as the final encoding seems to be done, should be done, from the full-size image in any case.) As it is now, the inserted images are so large that I wonder if a new user would even figure out how to resize it down. Mozilla's Thunderbird has had better Inline Image functionality for years -- why not get some ideas from them? Thunderbird 2 or Thunderbird 3 (beta). Put a less-geeky UI on their functionality and you'd be heroes and WLM would be more popular. If you're trying to promote Add Photos by crippling Inline images, I don't think having a good Insert->Inline image would hurt Add Photos -- the functions are different, they don't compete. |

On my system, WLM 2009 definitely is inserting inline images at full size -- which are then difficult to size down to a reasonable size, using the resize handles on the image. Rather than a change in design intent (unlikely), I'm wondering if it might be a problem with IE (perhaps WLM uses IE or some other system component). I'm using IE7 (7.0.6001.18000) on Vista Home Prem, all up to date. Maybe MS is having problems with the transition to IE8. Is anyone else seeing Insert->Inline images appearing in the insert at full size, in WLM 2009? |
