Gmail (IMAP) and Windows Live Mail

Hello, this is a new thread based on an old problem that I submitted several
months ago. I stopped using WLM for a while because I could not find a
solution and now I've tried using WLM 2009 and the problem still exists.
Several people have reported this. Here is the original thread question:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, I've been putting up for this error for almost a year now without
complaining. Am I the only one who uses Gmail IMAP (setup correctly according
to Gmail configuration recommendations) and gets the following error
constantly when switching between folders? This error doesn't happen every
time I switch between folders, but it does occur with an annoyingly high
frequency, and it seems almost random.

Purging messages from folder... (10 seconds of waiting, then the following
error)

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity.

This IMAP command could not be sent to the server before the connection was
terminated.

Configuration:
Account: Gmail
Server: imap.gmail.com
User name: x@xxxxxx
Protocol: IMAP
Port: 993
Secure(SSL): 1
Code: 800ccc0f

IMAP is 993, SSL. SMTP is 465, SSL. IMAP root folder is set to [Gmail].
Check for new messages in all folders is checked. Store special folders on
IMAP server is checked. Sent Items path is Sent Mail. Drafts path is Drafts.
Deleted Items path is Trash. Junk path is Spam.

Does anyone else who uses Gmail (IMAP) with WLM have this issue?

Thank you for the support in advance. If I can't get this to work I may try
just using offline Gmail now that it's available, but I'd rather use WLM if
possible.

I suspect this is the key to the pattern:

So, think about what you would have done which would make
the connection to be closed without sending a logout.

If the other side isn't paying any attention to the dropped connection
and treating it as a logout you could have an explanation for your symptom.
E.g. the host could still be considering you to be logged in all this time.
How long a timeout would it allow you for such a state? Have you
tried waiting longer than the 4 minutes you are giving it here?

and what is going on during these 40 seconds?

I think you really need a better trace, such as the Wireshark trace that
poster Dawn took in the previous discussion, to see what is really
happening here. My guess is that a second login attempt was made
before the other side had completely timed out the previous half session
and rejected it because it only allows 1 logged on session at a time.
Note: this is pure speculation based on the symptoms given. I don't
have an IMAP account to do any testing with to know exactly how
feasible the scenario I am hypothesing might be.

Good luck

------------------------------------------------------

One thing that is certain is that this problem always occurs after I've left
the computer idle for a long time, e.g. overnight or when I'm not home. I
leave my computer on all day and leave WLM running in the background
continuously. I assume that the "FETCH" commands are when it checks for/syncs
with Gmail IMAP. I have WLM set to sync every 5 minutes, so there are a lot
of successful FETCHs. But when I come back home and check mail after a long
period of inactivity, this problem occurs and I have to wait for it to
reconnect or sometimes I have to restart WLM.

The reason I'm reluctant to do trace is because I never had this issue when
using Outlook, and of course I was using the same computer, same connection,
and same port settings, etc. The only difference is the mail client.

Thank you for your help.

But that may be the difference. E.g. if Outlook *does* send a logout
before disconnecting, you have your answer. Does Outlook have
any diagnostics for IMAP connections so you could compare that way?

I still think the real cause is being obscured by the limited tracing
you are getting with WLMail's troubleshooting log.

BTW you could use netcap to do a capture. It is really easy to start
and IMO more transparent than Ethereal/Wireshark. Then you can use
Ethereal/Wireshark to format the .cap file that netcap creates. That's
easy to do too. The harder part may be analysing what you captured.
But Ethereal has a Follow TCP Stream command which could make that easier.
Again, I don't have IMAP so I don't have specific experience which would
help your case.

Another approach would be to try to establish an interested contact
on the server side. E.g. they could tell you whether the IMAP server
appears to have an active connection involving your account before you
try reconnecting. Or perhaps by involving a server operator you could
find out that there is an option that the server could use which would
improve your case.

Good luck

Robert
