| | Importing mails from MSN Explorer Mail stored on local folder I am helping a friend to migrate from Quest MSN Explorer Mail to Live Mail. All the folders that are on the MSN server migrated without problem. However, there are a few of the local folders on the local HD that I wanted to import/migrate to Live Mail as well, but I have not found a way to do so. The Import from Live Mail seems to support only the MS Exchange, MS Outlook, MS OE, Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail. There is no option for the MSN Explorer mail. I have tried the Live Mail option, for example, and the best I got was the empty folders but no mails were imported. Can anyone think of a way to do so? I know I can forward the mails to myself via MSN, but this is a kludge I won't want to undertake. It screws up the dates for one thing and the number is just too many. The MSN mail is running dog-slow right now (a separate issue) and that is one of the reasons for migrating to Live Mail. Thanks! Martin |

| | Re: Importing mails from MSN Explorer Mail stored on local folder You can drag the message from the MSN Explorer UI to a folder on your Desktop, rename the file extensions from '.email' to '.eml', then drag the messages onto the WLMail UI. Although it does not relate to MSN Explorer, this article might help to clarify some questions about the best way to go about the drag and drop method of export/import: http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com...90CA!213.entry You can use a file renaming tool such as Renamer (http://www.den4b.com/projects.php) to rename the file extensions. Otherwise, you could probably export to Windows Mail, then import from there to WLMail. -- Cheers, Peter.R (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 14.0.8050.1202) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare "Martin" <abc@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:utqj0PZhJHA.5540@xxxxxx Quote: > I am helping a friend to migrate from Quest MSN Explorer Mail to Live Mail. > All the folders that are on the MSN server migrated without problem. > However, there are a few of the local folders on the local HD that I wanted > to import/migrate to Live Mail as well, but I have not found a way to do so. > > The Import from Live Mail seems to support only the MS Exchange, MS Outlook, > MS OE, Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail. | | Re: Importing mails from MSN Explorer Mail stored on local folder In my experience the best method is "Mail & More", "Help & Settings", "E-mail Settings", "Import or export e-mail, copy e-mail, or import contacts", "Export e-mail and contacts", which brings you to a screen for exporting locally stored messages to Outlook Express. Unfortunately that functionality is not supported under Vista. Once you have the messages in Outlook Express, which only works under XP and earlier versions of Windows, then you can easily move them to WLM. If your MSN Explorer is no longer functional then there are a number of earlier threads in the MSN group concerned with manually copying messages from MSN's storage folders. You could probably adapt this information for use with WLM. | | Re: Importing mails from MSN Explorer Mail stored on local folder Here's the saved text of the process I've posted in the past. The instructions were writen for someone needing to recover messages from a PC where MSN Explorer was non-functional and the user wished to get them back into MSN Explorer on another PC *and* they had not used the MSN Explorer export to a .msnbak file for this purpose. The email files are all stored within the user profile folder. For 9.0/9.1 and 9.5/9.6 they are slightly different. In 9.0/9.1 they can be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\{userID}\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN\db\ In 9.5/9.6, change \db\ to \db30\ In order to see the folders and the files within them, you need to set the Windows Explorer options to show hidden files and folders and possibly system files. Inside this db30 folder, you will find files with an extension of .sdf - ignore these. You're interested in the ones that look like: username-msn-com.1a0, 1a1, etc. and also within the folders \Mail(MSN user ID)\ with extensions of .000, starting with stm0x... You can copy and rename these files to have an extension of .eml. Double-clicking them will open them in Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail, depending on what's installed. You can then move them to a folder in OE/WM/WLM if desired for future access or import into MSN mail, or you can send them back to yourself for filing within the MSN client program. On 10/5/07, "ComputerGuy" posted this tip in the MSN Discussion newsgroup: "...here is one little piece of advise. After renaming about 50 of the thousand plus emails it hit to me to just go into windows explorer, tools, folder options and add file the file extension of .000 and give it the same properties as a ...eml file thus saving me hours of having to rename all the files. Not really needed when it is only a couple of messages but when there are hundreds or even thousands of files, this will save much pain and suffering." And, Earle H. offered an additional tip: Open a Command Prompt (Start/Run/cmd) and navigate to the folder that you copied the contents of the \db30 folder to and type the following command - REN *.000 *.EML And then press enter. This will rename all files in that folder with an extension of 000 to now have an extension of eml. -steve "...winston" <winstonmvp@xxxxxx> wrote: Quote: >f I get time, I'll track down the response..I reset my newsgroups recently and its not in my cache. > >-- > ...winston > ms-mvp mail > >"Martin" <abc@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:#fK5sbihJHA.4912@xxxxxx Quote: >> I'll check that forum out.
