Duplicate Messages

Windows Live Mail v14.0.8050.1202
Windows 7 build 7000

I move messages that I want to save from the Inbox to the Storage Folders
(using right-click - Move to folder). The Inbox is empty. I may even restart
Windows Live Mail. Next day I find some of the messages that I moved to
Storage Folders back in Inbox. They are also in the Storage folders. In the
Inbox, some will only be listed in the message list and the reading pane
would say "message not found" others would be listed in the message list and
their contents would also be visible in the reading pane.

Re: Duplicate Messages

I've occasionally seen that myself on Build 12.0.1606 on XP when moving
messages from one folder to another (this includes a message rule moving
messages during download from a POP3 account).

It doesn't happen very often. Maybe once a month or so.

What pattern I've noticed is that it seems to only happen on messages
that were moved just before closing WLM (within a minute or so). And
I'm not sure, but it may also be that I've shutdown Windows itself right
after that. The problem doesn't show up until the next time I start
WLM.

Does that seem to match your experience?

If I had to guess, I'd say what's happening is that some updates to
Mail.MSMessageStore as a result of the move aren't getting written disk
and when it restarts WLM finds an inconsistency since the actual EML
files have been moved to the underlying Windows folder.

Re: Duplicate Messages

Are you moving messages from the Quick Views 'Inbox' view or the account's Inbox folder ?

Yes, I've seen various anomalies when I close WLM too soon after some
activity, such as Sync Everything. If I click Sync Everything and then I
Exit while WLM is still Retrieving Posts, WLM's progress window will remain
open even after the main WLM window has closed. After such an Exit from
WLM, it appears that several housekeeping tasks don't get done. Next time
WLM is started, there may be duplicate messages. Usually one of those
copies will show the sender's email address in the From column in the long
form. That is, instead of showing just "Michael Santovec", it will show the
message as From "Michael Santovec" <michael_santovec@xxxxxx>. If I
don't delete either post, but simply continue to operate normally, after I
exit and restart WLM, or just keep working for some undetermined period of
time, that second entry will disappear. (Much like the Recovered Items
folder sometimes (but not always) resolves its issues and cleans up its part
of the database without help from me.)

WLM's housekeeping apparently goes on in the background and will eventually
handle most (all?) of these database glitches - unless we get exasperated
and impatient and force the fix before WLM gets around to it.

My usual practice now is to wait for several minutes after my final Sync
Everything, until the Retrieving Posts message disappears, before closing
WLM. Long enough to play a hand or two of FreeCell. ;<} Then, when I see
no more apparent activity in WLM, I exit it. And then I give it a few more
minutes before I Shut Down the computer for the night.

The WLM Team needs to do work on ensuring a "graceful exit" from the
program.
