| | Why Doesn't Live Mail/Messenger work? I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP3, with DSL connection. I have Spyware Blaster and Hive Cleanup. I also had AVG antivirus free version, and Comodo firewall, but on the advise from another I removed these and am now using only Windows firewall with no antivirus. For the past several weeks MSN Live Messenger has not logged automatically as it normally does and I have to manual start it from the desktop and the only way I can now access Hotmail is via IE (Version 7). I have reinstalled Live Mail and Messenger from the following link: The beta ended about a week ago. See... 1. http://download.live.com/ 2. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...D=ad12ce71-7d9... -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ However I still have the same problem and it 'appears' I do not have a current version; how can I tell which version I have? In addition, it was found that I had become infected with a Trojan virus which I was able to delete but didn't think at the time to see if I could track the parent program it resides on hence the removal of AVG and Comodo on the advise of another. Also, it was found also with the help of another via remote assistance that my MFT files are corrupted althlough I have no way of knowing if this is factual myself. I know this is getting a bit off topic but I wanted to relay as much information as possible. I realize that I may end up reinstalling my OS and that signing on to Windows Live Messenger/ Hotmail is of small importance in comparison but it was that very fact and several postings here asking for assistance which lead me to discover the other 'possible' problems I have with my system. In any case, I can see by all the postings that there is something wrong with WLM and it isn't just me. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you, Robert |

| | Re: Why Doesn't Live Mail/Messenger work? Actually, WLM works fine for most users. Running your computer without any antivirus is not recommended. Since your system was apparently infected with a Trojan virus, it may not be completely clean, so a reinstall of the OS is advisable. After reinstalling the OS, immediately download the free version of AVG antivirus. Be sure to select 'custom' install, which then allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module. -- Gary VanderMolen, MS-MVP (Mail) "Navyguy" <magineeer@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:7a194b48-a4b7-4ea8-bc2a-683844a8ab15@xxxxxx Quote: >I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP3, with DSL connection. | | Re: Why Doesn't Live Mail/Messenger work? You did not explain what problem you are having with Windows Live Mail. What version are you using? To find the version of Windows Live Mail installed, on the Menu Bar, go: Help->About Microsoft Windows Live Mail If you have the latest version of Messenger, there is no MSN in its name. It is called 'Windows Live Messenger'. To find the version of Windows Live Messenger installed, on the Menu Bar, go: Help->About Messenger The latest version of both Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Messenger is Version 2009 14.0.8050.1202 I recommend that you install an antivirus program and an antimalware program to protect your computer, and run a full scan after installing them. There are plenty of good free programs to choose from. -- Cheers, Peter.R (Windows Vista Home Premium with Windows Live Mail 14.0.8050.1202) "There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." - Shakespeare "Navyguy" <magineeer@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:7a194b48-a4b7-4ea8-bc2a-683844a8ab15@xxxxxx Quote: > I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP3, with DSL connection. | | Re: Why Doesn't Live Mail/Messenger work? I believe I did explain the problem, but in brief, MSN Live Messenger does not sign on automatically as it use to, I have to access it from the desktop to activate it. To acces Live mail I use to do it via MSN Live Messenger but now I have to access it from IE7. I went to the help menu and it only shows About Internet Explorer. So it seems I do not have any version of Live at all despite the fact that I've downloaded it with the links provided. | | Re: Why Doesn't Live Mail/Messenger work? I suspected that reinstalling was my only option and will attempt to do so as soon as I have saved my personal files anf folders and bookmarks onto disk. Unfortunately I do not have a dedicated external backup. As I said I had AVG but on the advice of another I disabled it as he said all freeware was malware as was Comodo and so disabled that and am using only Windows firewall at present. It doesn't sit very well with me either. He also said that AVG was European and was made by AVAST which is made for the US so should I use Avast instead? Or maybe something else? Please bear in mind that I have limited funds.
